Acute Flaccid Myelitis cannot paralyze Grace Fisher’s musical talent. To celebrate four years of adapting to a new life since becoming quadriplegic, Grace is giving back through A Winter Music Showcase, a benefit concert on December 22nd, 2018. Performers include Santa Barbara Youth Music Academy, Santa Barbara Strings, San Marcos High and Santa Barbara High Madrigals. The Santa Barbara Youth Symphony will also debut an original composition by Grace.

 

In 2014 Grace Fisher was a typical high school senior, when she became paralyzed in a matter of hours due to Acute Flaccid Myelitis (AFM). “Music is who I was, who I am, and who I continue to be,” says Grace. With a love of playing piano, cello, guitar and singing before getting sick with AFM, Grace has now transformed her disability through music. 

 

While in acute physical rehab, Grace began to crave the creativity she was used to having, and learned to play piano with a mouth stick. Since then, she has added arranging and composing music on the computer by using a special mouse for her mouth to her list of talents. 

 

“I decided not to dwell on what I lost, and instead look forward to expanding my abilities, including running my foundation. I want to make sure other kids get to experience creativity no matter what their personal challenges may be,” shared Grace.

 

“I don’t know where I’d be without by background as a musician, so it’s really important to me to make sure Santa Barbara continues to have thriving youth music programs.” Funds raised from the event will go to the performing groups and support the programs of the Grace Fisher Foundation.
