4th Annual Island View Trail Race Showcases Franklin Trail on Sept. 15

On your mark! Carpinteria’s landmark Franklin Trail is the spectacular setting for the 4th Annual Island View Trail Race hosted by Santa Barbara County Trails Council (Trails Council) on Sunday, Sept. 15. Runners and walkers are invited to join in 4-mile, 10-mile or 16-mile races heading out and back on this popular front-country course that offers amazing views of the Channel Islands.
“We’ve had great participation in the first three years of this race on one of the area’s newest trails, making this one of the premier running events in the area,” said Nancy Kaplan, Race Director. “Franklin Trail was hit hard by the Thomas Fire and it’s remarkable how well it has recovered. It is a testament to what trail crews can accomplish with strong community support.”
This is the second year of the 16-mile race (3,780 feet elevation gain), which allows participants to climb through chaparral-lined switchbacks to breathtaking views while getting the full experience of the longest trail in Santa Barbara’s front country. Over 150 participants are expected to join in the three races, celebrating cherished trail opportunities in the region and the community of outdoor enthusiasts who ensure trails remain open for public recreation and enjoyment.
Race proceeds benefit the Thomas Fire Trail Fund, which is managed by the Los Padres Forest Association, The C.R.E.W., Santa Barbara Mountain Bike Trail Volunteers and Trails Council. Currently, Trails Council and many community partners are restoring the upper stretches of Franklin Trail from damages sustained in the fire. Eventually, the trail will be connected over the crest of Santa Ynez Mountains and into the backcountry.
