350 Santa Barbara Hosts Community Conversation on Ramping Up Local Climate Solutions

May 19, 2022 @ 6:00 am PDT

On Thursday, May 19 at 6:00pm, 350 Santa Barbara will host an online community conversation about ramping up climate solutions in our region. A panel of climate activists will lead a discussion of environmentalist Paul Hawken’s book, Regeneration: Ending the Climate Crisis in One Generation. Register in advance for this meeting: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZYrfuyspj8pH9cK6_1YaOk2kgIP8kyoHh-a
According to Hawken, “Ending the crisis means that by 2030, collective action by humanity will have reduced total greenhouse gas emissions by 45 to 50 percent.”

The good news is that we already have solutions that are currently reducing greenhouse gas emissions. These solutions need to be rapidly deployed worldwide. In California, with a state economy that is wealthier than most countries, we also have an opportunity to lead the way.

The book and its accompanying website, regeneration.org, focus on what people can do individually and collectively to speed up the transition that will protect our climate and the viability of our ecosystems.

The regeneration.org website summarizes their approach: “Regeneration puts life at the center of every action and decision. It applies to all of life—grasslands, farms, insects, forests, fish, wetlands, coastlands, and oceans—and it applies equally to family, communities, cities, schools, religion, commerce, and governments. And most spectacularly to climate.”

On April 4, the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) issued its Sixth Assessment Report: Mitigation of Climate Change. The report summarizes what is being done, and outlines the further steps that humanity must take to ensure a stable climate and human survival. As UN Secretary General António Guterres tweeted, “It is time to stop burning our planet & start investing in the abundant renewable energy all around us. New @IPCC_CH report sets out viable, financially sound options in every sector that can keep the possibility of limiting global warming to 1.5° alive. https://t.co/xzccxqeTT4″
