350 Santa Barbara Hosts Climate Conversation on Regenerative Agriculture

April 21, 2022 @ 6:00 am PDT

On Thursday, April 21 from 6:00-7:00pm, 350 Santa Barbara will host an online Community Climate Conversation with guest speaker Jesse Smith from White Buffalo Land Trust (WBLT), a non-profit that is leading the way locally in regenerative agriculture.

Improving agricultural systems to help sequester carbon is key to reversing the climate crisis. In his book, Regeneration: Ending the Climate Crisis in One Generation, environmentalist Paul Hawken notes that one of the benefits of regenerative agriculture “is the sequestration of atmospheric carbon dioxide, resulting in significant increases in the carbon content of healthy soils. Regenerative agriculture has become the archetype and template for regeneration in general.”

WBLT is the steward of the Jalama Canyon Ranch where they are healing the land through regenerative practices such as combining climate appropriate crops and selected livestock that work in symbiotic harmony.  A well-known example of these practices forms the heart of the documentary, The Biggest Little Farm, an audience favorite at the SB Film Festival in 2019.

WBLT also partners with a diverse group of people and institutions interested in regenerative agriculture.  They offer programs for K-12 students to better understand the inter-dependence of human health with a robust eco-system, and educate farmers and ranchers in courses ranging from ecological monitoring to holistic planned grazing.

This April event is the fourth in a series of Community Climate Conversations. The series will conclude on May 19, with a discussion of Hawken’s book, Regeneration, and how the climate solutions outlined in the book can be scaled-up locally.
