About the Santa Barbara Square Dance Club: In 1958 Bill Saunders was the first instructor of the dance club that was sponsored by the Whirlaways Square Dance Club along with the Santa Barbara Recreation Department. There were seven clubs in Santa Barbara at that time. The first class graduated in March 1959 and then formed an Intermediate Square Dance Club called Taws ‘n’ Paws, which created bylaws and installed officers. Taws ‘n’ Paws was officially founded by Saunders on April 1, 1959 with 150 dancing members. Charter members Lois & Dick Cofiell are still dancing as club members at the St. Mark United Methodist Church and will be participating in the new season beginning on September 27, 2017. The club celebrated their 58th anniversary in May 2017.
