07:00 PM FREE ONLINE WEBINAR: The Goleta Kelp Reef Restoration Project

Presentation by Chris Goldblatt, Founder & Executive Director, Fish Reef Project, A Zoom Webinar Where: Online from Santa Barbara Maritime Museum, 113 Harbor Way, Santa Barbara When: Thursday, July 16, 2020 at 7:00pm Cost: Free, but registration is required Registration: https://sbmm.org/santa-barbara-event/the-goleta-kelp-reef-restoration-project/or (805) 456-8747 Sponsored by: Marie L Morrisroe Little understood by the public, kelp is a soft buffer that helps to retain wider beaches, protects coastal real estate, and reduces greenhouse gases. The 1982-83 El Nino storms caused the loss of kelp forests that were once 1000 feet wide and went from El Capitan to Carpinteria and resulted in the loss of Goleta Bay’s kelp beds and beaches. Another reason for the decline of the kelp beds is that the boulders, which come off the hills and hold kelp, wear down over time and the system had not been recharging. The Fish Reef Project, named Goleta Kelp Reef Restoration Project, aims to create 220 acres of offshore reef systems with manufactured fish reef units and quarry rock. This process will give kelp a place to attach, grow, and kick off the recovery of kelp forests and critical habitats for many forms of marine life, including sea otters. Chris Goldblatt, a 40-year veteran of our local waterways, founded the Fish Reef Project (https://www.fishreef.org/) to ensure long-term ocean health by turning empty seafloor into thriving marine ecosystems and home, breeding and feeding grounds to millions of marine mammals, sea birds, turtles, fish, lobster, abalone, scallops, marine algae and much more. These manufactured fish reefs will reduce pressure on natural reefs, thus reducing over-fishing while helping to restore damaged natural reef systems. Goldblatt has a BS in Fisheries & Business from Humboldt State, and has been a guest lecturer at UC Santa Barbara and an International Seabed Authority observer, contributor, and speaker since 2014. In 2018, he was the Invited Guest Speaker at the Civil Society Forum of the Blue Economy Conference in Nairobi, Kenya. An early pioneer of the sustainable seafood movement, Goldblatt is also an accomplished author, business owner, fisherman, diver, and fishing boat owner and operator.

05:00 PM MTD YOUTH ART POSTER CONTEST GOES ONLINE

Santa Barbara MTD’s 6th Annual Youth Art Poster Contest was originally planned to take place this spring at various afterschool programs on the South Coast. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the afterschool programs were shuttered and the contest was put on hold.

Not to worry—the Youth Art Poster Contest is now online and students can participate from the comfort of home. Students in 1st through 6th grade in Southern Santa Barbara County are invited to participate by drawing or painting original artwork that fits with this year’s theme of “Outdoor Adventure Buses”. Contest details, the entry form, and the required artwork template can be found at sbmtd.gov/artcontest.

Entries are due by July 31st, 2020 and can be submitted in one of two ways: scanned and emailed to [email protected]or mailed to MTD at 550 Olive Street, Santa Barbara, CA 93101.

The winning works of art will be featured inside MTD buses for the next year. MTD looks forward to seeing what kinds of creative works of art the students in our community will create, and we’re happy to give parents something to keep those antsy kids busy over the summer!

04:00 AM The Art of Videography

“The Art of feeding America” was the catalyst of the Covid-19 way of new Artistic expression. I'm an artist who has been in galleries for over 2 years. Once Covid struck, that was all over, but what a new beginning. My friends and I started the Art of Feeding America as a campaign to raise funds in a Zoom Art Show which meant each artist was to have submitted a 2 minute video. Yikes! Tall order and no experience using IMovie, I knew that this was to be the new wave. I got down to business. Within 5 days I was able to use the photos and film clips in my iphone to put together a cool and fun video. If you're an artist and you're afraid of these fandango electronics or don't know where to begin, come to my zoom room. There I will show you the basics of uploading pictures, movie clips, editing, and where to find free music uploads. The price of admission: $25.00. A contribution will be made to Farmlink.com. Please register by July 30, 2020 - Link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMlcOqvrDItH9codVbWQzdodQV7t-7mviu6 Love and Light, Brendan Briggs JBR Visuals
