The injured owl that was rescued by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network (SBWCN) is expected to survive.

The Ojai Raptor Center posted an update on Facebook Monday stating they received a lot of inquiries about the injured owl. It sustained serious impact from a collision with a car and as a result had significant internal bleeding as well as trauma to the face, nasal cavity and eye. Their initial prognosis was not good.

Over the weekend with a course of medication and supportive care the bleeding has subsided, the eye has made significant improvement and he/she started eating on its own! Based on the weight and body condition of this Owl it could either be male or female at this point, the Ojai Raptor Center Stated.

As of Monday, they are confident in announcing the Owl is going to survive.

For those willing to support the Ojai Raptor Center's rehabilitation efforts, they're asking for donations through Patagonia Action Works this month where all donations will be matched. Click here for more information.

CHP Rescues Owl from Highway

By edhat staff
December 7, 2019

California Highway Patrol (CHP) received multiple calls of an injured owl on Highway 101 Thursday.

CHP officers responded to Highway 101 northbound near Milpas Street in Santa Barbara and discovered the owl in the center divider of the freeway.

Gary, a volunteer from the Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network (SBWCN), also responded to the scene and was able to safely capture and transport the owl to their facility.

The owl was then transported to the Ojai Raptor Center for further evaluation and treatment.

Big thanks to CHP and SBWCN for giving a hoot about local wildlife.

Back into the wild to be a voracious, carnivorus predator again. Celebrating the circle of life -eat or be eaten. Bon appetit, Mr, Owl.

People downvote the commentor, not the comment. But since Edhat changed their policy on getting rid of downvoted comments, I have begun to see the downvotes as a badge of honor .

Instead of using that Ojai Raptor envelope, I was happy to have my donation matched and just sent in my $20 via credit card. Now all I need is to hear that this Barn owl is going to be well enough to be put back out into the wild.

Amazing story....the Ojai Raptor Center, has a great open house...I think, once a year ? Fun to go, educational...they have all sorts of raptors, you can see hawks, vultures, lots of owls, an occasional eagle, they show how they help them get back in the wild...

I love that the CHP (California "Hoot" Patrol) sent their tallest officer, who looks like he's 10 feet tall, to watch over the little owl!

Thanks, Edhat, for this story. Nice to know we have such caring people, not a huge surprise but always nice to hear their stories.

Makes my heart warm to read this story. Good wishes to both the little owl and the people involved who saved him/her.

The Ojai Raptor Center posted in comment section of Facebook page that they will be doing a full post on this little guy soon. It was in critical condition but is doing very well. Looks like it will be good news for this little one. Thanks for helping it out

YES!!!! Every little bit helps! Thank you for being a donator. I donate to wildlife causes all the time, and I'm on the lower to lowest end of the income scale. I sometimes donate even $5 if I don't have any more, but yes, every dollar helps.

Sitting on my kitchen table right now is an envelope ready for my donation check to Ojai Raptor. Kinda bizarre, that envelope and then this Barn owl post. It's only a $20 donation but every little bit helps, right?

It's heartwarming that there is such care for such a small creature. Thanks to the CHP and the SBWCN - and to Edhat for publicizing that there are people out there helping! I used to help with the SBWCN and know how rewarding (and how sad, sometimes) is the rescue. Hopefully, this little creature will recover. The picture is haunting.

Upper Eastside we can hear the Barn owls screeching overhead nearly every night. I believe November is their nesting month here. We installed a Barn owl nesting box years ago, to no avail. Let's all hope this little guy/girl can be mended and rehabbed. Maybe Ojai Raptor Center is the place for such attention.

Same here. Screeching of those owls have been very evident this year and the rodent count is noticeably down. Compare this with the summer/fall right after the Thomas Fire ... we heard no owls and there were tons of rodents in the neighborhood.

Hope this little barn owl makes it. Looks like a broken wing, perhaps flew into a windshield? Thank you CHP and SBWCN for helping this suffering creature.

Glad you got it. Wonder what was wrong that caused it to be there? Hope it can get treated and released asap!
