Two semi-trucks became jackknifed on Old San Marcos Road Thursday evening due to wildfire detours.

A brush fire that sparked near El Capitan Canyon shut down Highway 101 for a period of time while fire crews tended to the blaze. Motorists and semi-trucks were re-routed through Buellton to use Highway 154 and Old San Marcos Road.

Just after 7:00 p.m. two semi-trucks became stuck as they jackknifed on the notoriously windy road that's caused many accidents for larger vehicles.

California Highway Patrol responded to the scene near Twin Ridge Road and assisted with the cleanup. The roadway is currently clear.

These look like owner operators. Company drivers would be smart and just sit it out and get paid by the hour until the 101 opened again. Estupido.

There are signs posted for “no trucks” at both the top and bottom of San Marcos Road. Coming from 154, as soon as you turn into San Marcos Road, there is a large area for a truck to turn around and go back to 154. Once a tractor/trailer goes past that point, the first place to turn around is at Twinridge Road - 2 miles down. Yes, the whole road will be completely blocked by these trucks until help comes.

So, for what reason did they take Old SM Rd rather than 154? To save time? Was the on traffic going into SB on the 154 backed up all the way to Old SM Rd?

I thought the same things when I heard this last night. Terrifying, really. Would be great if CHP chimed in. I'll put contacting them on a to-do list; no promises it'll get done.

THERE ARE SIGNS POSTED. There should be severe consequences... Can you imagine if a fire happened to start and these idiots were blocking egress routes...?

There are two different GPS systems. One for regular joe's, and one for commercial trucks and oversized vehicles. The regular one directs traffic to Old San Marcos or Painted Cave Rd as a viable route. The other does not (or so I am told). The one for commercial vehicles is not as easy to come by and far more expensive.

Definitely should be signage that is really clear about long vehicles being prohibited on that road, and fines imposed on those who ignore and get stuck! I remember way back in the 70s a couple times tour buses getting hung up on the switchbacks, couple wheels off the pavement. Lived at the Trout Club then. Neighbors took water and snacks to the tourists waiting for the tow truck.

These two truck driver should be fined and forced to pay for the costs of the CHP's time as well as a Stupid Motorist fine. Make it steep, $1500+ and put it on the truck's owner as well as the driver. It seems the only way idiots learn is to be penalized. So penalize them. Seriously, the hairpins on that road are too sharp for small box trucks and these morons thought it was a decent option for their rigs!

The street already has signs posted "no semis" (or something similar), but maybe it is time for an actively flashing sign. This could easily become a deadly evacuation problem were a fire to happen in the area at the same time.

Agreed. No sympathy for these truck drivers. They should be cited. I was stuck on 154 and people were generally good at allowing people to merge in from old san marcos rd or cross to go up to painted cave. However the truck drivers and chumash shuttle were super aggressive on 154.
