In an effort to prevent wildfires, California power companies are cutting electricity in high-risk areas throughout the state.

Southern California Edison (SCE) has cut the power to nearly 13,000 customers on Thursday from Fillmore to Rancho Cucamonga, mostly in unincorporated areas. Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E)'s outage map was down Thursday afternoon but the predicted areas in Northern California started in Eureka and extended down to Watsonville.

While SCE and PG&E provide service to the local area, Santa Barbara County was not considered for the current Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS). The Santa Barbara County Office of Emergency Management has been actively engaged with both utilities as elevated fire weather and winds continue to impact California.

It's estimated that over 1 million people were without power in California on Thursday.

Santa Barbara residents are encouraged to go to www.ReadySBC.org to learn more about how to prepare for a potential PSPS event and register to receive notifications from local emergency response agencies should a PSPS event or other disasters occur within the county.

The community is invited to learn more about the PSPS program and information to help prepare for possible extended power outages on October 14 in Santa Maria. The meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the County Government Center Hearing Room (511 East Lakeside Parkway, Santa Maria 93455). It will also be streamed live on the County’s YouTube channel “CSBTV20.”

Juan Browne is making a daily update on the situation. I hope he does a wrap up on how the elderly fared. One of the shocking things in the video was that the main supermarket could not keep their refrigeration running so they basically gave away all their freezer inventory. This PSPS plan is not sustainable economically.

Here’s an on the ground report from Northern California by Juan Browne of the Blancolirio YouTube channel about the extended preemptive power outage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7m1xcX_X0wc He’s reporting from his small town of Nevada City. It’s the real deal, a multi day power outage. They are in day two. Watch and learn because this is coming our way one of these days. No gasoline, no refrigeration, no groceries.

The problem with Juan is that he is not unbiased. His videos are well made but skew heavily to a conservative agenda. Can you spell confirmation bias?

The "prior notification" thing hasn't worked out so well. City of Thousand Oaks just tweeted that "SCE has initiated power shutoffs in areas of Thousand Oaks without prior notification."

Hauling home a portable generator may not be safe but getting one properly installed by a knowledgeable person is not unsafe. Check what I wrote about my friends in Northern CA and the safety of theirs.

Caltrans video is excellent! Shows what to do at intersections when the power is shut off. Please share: https://dot.ca.gov/news-releases/news-release-2019-071

Liquor store and pot shop visits necessary before the power goes out. Remember: dope will get you through times of no electricity better than electricity will get you through times of no dope. Same for liquor.

2 million people without power in California... Probably time to talk about a public takeover of the bankrupt (or nearly so) California power companies: https://thenextsystem.org/learn/stories/public-takeover-pge-radically-common-sense-proposal

If anyone needs power for medical reasons, or whatever, a generator is a good idea. My friends in Northern CA have their power off, it happens to go out fairly often so they have a generator. It automatically comes on when the power goes. They have had this one for 11 years, it is expected to last at least 5 more years. Someone comes to check it every year. Perfectly safe.

Sam the dog: The difference between government and private corporations is that we have elections to deal with government malfeasance. Private greed, corruption and theft (which is definitional in the free enterprise system) is not reachable by voters, is generally covered up for years and, when discovered, leads not to reimbursement, corrective action or rebates but to bankruptcy which just allows the crooks to move on to their next fleecing. And, yes, the PUC which was to monitor these shenigans has been corrupted to its core and yes the PUC was in the hands of Democrats by and large--corporations can buy either party (just remember the Clinton presidency).

You really think the inefficiencies of a government run institution would be a lower expense than dividends to investors? You must not have had much interaction with government entities.

Of course not everyone has the resources to spend thousands of dollars on buying and maintaining this sort of back up. People should be able to rely on the utilities companies to provide power with minimal and very short interruptions. For the less affluent this is even more critical as they simply cannot go live in a motel or resort while the problem lasts. It is time to put the "public" back in public utilities by simply taking them over and eliminating the need to provide dividends to private shareholders.

I saw an interview on tv of a woman in Northern California a couple days ago. She appeared to be bright and alert, and had just purchased a portable generator. The interviewer told her she could not run the generator inside her house, and she was surprised.

Twoscoops - that is frightening. Now multiply that woman and her dangerous ignorance times a few thousand and you get what happens when people run out and buy generators for these power outages. Not every person has the skills/knowledge to run a generator safely. This results in a huge risk of injury/fire/death. Scary.

If Edison cuts our power for several days, unplug everything in your home. Turn off breakers or remove fuses. If there is an extended power outage, you may want to leave one lighting circuit on so you will know when the electricity comes back on. Turn off or disconnect appliances, equipment, or electronics. Beware of power surges when power is restored. Edison will want to move slowly to resume power again, and avoid problems, and we should, too.

If Edison implements safety power shutoffs, Caltrans says what to do if traffic signals aren’t working. (1) Flashing Red - treat as a stop sign. (2) No Signal Light - treat as all-way stop. Also, train signals -full stop. Caltrans video: https://dot.ca.gov/news-releases/news-release-2019-071
