As a parent with a child at San Marcos High School, I received this notice a few minutes ago:
"San Marcos School on Lockout
At about 10:50 a.m. today, we received a report that El Camino Elementary was on lockout due to a report of gunshots heard near the campus. In collaboration with the District Office and the Sheriff's Department, San Marcos High School called for a lockout. We will update you on the development as soon as we can.

SMHS is on LOCKOUT, not LOCKDOWN. That means there is a threat OFF campus. Lockdown is if there is a threat ON campus.

Helicopters continuously circling over head. Reporting in from north San Marcos and Calle Real.

can you please rephrase so people do not get the wrong idea?
Im assuming your daughter is in the library listening to the scanners of what is going on somewhere else.

Also listening to an online scanner, hearing law enforcement do a Code 33 and said "incident has been completed." Not sure what this means.

It said "clear the Code 33 which is emergency traffic only. It's all over, nothing found back to normal.

So first one of the year--what are we, one month in?

Just great. How many times are the kids going to be freaking traumatized this year? This crap doesn't happen in the vast majority of the first world. The morons have truly taken over this country--well it was fun while it lasted.

Was the choice to make an emergency call an honest mistake? Or was it completely bogus? A bogus call with a valid rationale to legitimize it? Will we ever know?

This sounds like the bogus lockdown call at Solvang School last week. What's going on lately? Is there a way to detect false alarms BEFORE freaking out everybody? Maybe get it verified by a school principal or other credible staff person vs a student who thinks they see the boogie man. Really!

I did not post the Solvang Lock Down I waited for that very reason I did not want a bunch of parents freaking out unless there was reason to.

The parents went off the deep end in Solvang, Roger. Talk about overreacting to a non-event that was all supposedly reported by a student. Sheesh! Where was the school administration right out the gate on that one? They took forever to issue a statement, but only after every kid at the upper school had texted their folks. Wow!

Last August I read a report about bulletproof backpacks for adults and schoolchildren. The packs are heavy. The weight would make it difficult for the kids to run and hide. Kids might attempt to try and access their backpacks (if the packs aren't handy) rather than taking cover. On and on. Imagine telling your child s/he needs to have a bulletproof backpack for school safety? What HAS the world come to?

Not seeing anything here but SO has shelter in place for large area in Goleta and evacuating apartments in 6700 block of Encina. Also calling CHP for assistance.

TAGDES. I think that's different incident. One where the guy barricaded himself in his home. The SMHS incident was reports of gunshots in apartments near SMHS.

At 08:46 pm, Yes I am well aware of that, I posted the all clear for San Marcos over 9 hours ago. "Not anything here" means means it's something new. I said Encina in Goleta, not San Marcos in Noleta. If people would read previous comments before jumping in it would really lessen the confusion here.

So every time a loud bang is heard in Goleta San Marcos will be on lock down/ lock out? How about forcing the property owner of the “Granny Flat” area to clean up all the homeless encampments there? Doesnt the school district own that property? The crime and trash is bad enough, the risk of fire is worse. A brush fire there could easily spread to nearby dense neighborhoods.

Granny Flats is not the only reason why the school has been on Lock Down for that is just one problem property.

Not as simple as sending a janitor over to clean things up. You have to have cops in case the people are dangerous, and you need Marborg to take care of the hazardous materials. Takes a lot of coordination to clean up a camp and then you know they will be right back!

The school went on lockout because someone possibly may have maybe heard a bang that could possibly maybe be a gunshot. The last time I remember this happening it was because some 1/2 blind person saw a man with a radiator hose on campus and mistook it for a gun (a radiator hose. Really?!??
I blame all this knee-jerk responses on 1 or 2 hysterical parents who evidently need therapy to deal with their irrational fears & extreme anxiety.

Maybe you should blame it on the fact that we have mass shooting every week in this country. So, you know, people are starting to think they may be next. You really don't know what you're talking about, so maybe just sit int he corner quietly.

We need Shot Spotter gun fire detection system. Its a system of microphones that can discern fireworks and car back-fires from real gun shots. If the shots are real it can direct police to within 100 feet of the gunfire so they can take appropriate action. It is already deployed in many US cities and is 100% accurate.

Do we really "need" that, though? Sounds like a huge expense, likely ongoing, for very little payoff in our area. Urban areas with high crime and not enough police to go around? Sure. Santa Barbara? Nah.

So we have a difference of opinion but you might change your mind if you or someone you cared about was shot by some mad person right out of the blue.

Parents freaking out? Why wouldn't they with the school shootings/killings in this country in recent years. Over caution is better than having the possibility of your kid being killed, or having them watching friends killed.

There have been a number of close calls in SBUSD with kids who had weapons and plans but were stopped. To the people who dismiss parents who care about their kids' LIVES, WTF is wrong with you?

Cleaning up street camps - you ya gonna call? Scott Presler. Recent news that the LA Times apparently ignored so few in this area know what just happened - civic activism gets camps cleaned up and out: "Conservative activist Scott Presler organized a street clean-up at a homeless camp in Los Angeles on Saturday and estimated that he and his team cleared about 50 tons of trash from the area.
Presler has organized clean-ups across the country in Baltimore; Los Angeles; Newark, New Jersey; and Virginia Beach, Virginia. He’s also planning to organize more cleanups in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Detroit in the coming months."
“If people are feeling inspired, don’t just tweet and Facebook,” Presler told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “Stop talking, start doing.”

Without fail, the houseless/homeless get dragged into every issue. As if it is their fault the NRA and its' Russian financiers have a lock on the puppet traitor POTUS who OK's mentally ill people running around with AK's and Glocks. Someone's car backfires and the convo turns to those who are so plighted that Granny Hill is their best option. And, for the record, the Sheriff's Dept did a massive sweep there a while back, and the vast majority of unhoused citizens stayed as far away from there as possible after a homeless person wasbeaten to death by a housed person. So how about not agitating yet again against these the most vulnerable people and looking to the actual issue here, which is the daily proliferation of the weapons of war into the hands of anybody with a hundred bucks or so who wants one?
