This cartoon from the local paper in August 1919 shows some kids wanting to bring their dog on the streetcar. A similar incident occurred here five years ago with a dog named “Speedy.” I wrote about that in the October chapter of “Way Back When: Santa Barbara in 1914.”

Betsy's Way Back When book -- 1918 -- is now available in local bookstores and at Amazon.com. This is the fifth book in her series of the history of Santa Barbara, one year at a time. Learn more at betsyjgreen.com

Way Back When: Dogs on Streetcars, Again!

Dogs are everywhere. Yesterday another person was in the supermarket with her dog attached to a leash walking around in the produce and other areas. This dog has some vest that was not about training an assistance dog. This does bother me. I have seen dogs urinate in grocery stores and airport waiting areas. Please keep dogs out of these places that should be kept clean and relatively sanitary. The selfish idea that a person needs a dog's companionship to go everywhere and damn to the rest of the population is growing. This is part of the raveling of a society.
