I have a medical issue. My dr signed it off. So I need tinted windows to drive during the day.

Dark tinted widows in the front side windows are a danger to pedestrians, other drivers and law enforcement. This violation should be vigorously prosecuted by law enforcement as a basic safety issue to their personal security. Congratulations to the officer who was/is doing this. People who have such tinting done, an those who install such tinting are basically either anti-social, greedy or just egotistical.

Especially dangerous for bicyclists. It is a good technique to make sure you see the driver's eyes before you roll in front of a car, and tinted windows prevent that.

NEXTGUY. Thank you for posting your comment. I was thinking the same thing. Why isn't our local LE busting people for tinting? There was a vehicle downtown the other day and I couldn't see the driver at all.

You do know, of course, that both the vehicle owner and the tint shop who installs the illegal tinting can be cited and prosecuted. There are not enough officers who do cite for this, but they should. Good luck if you are in a collision and your windows are illegally tinted. Do you think that might be a collision factor and that your insurance company will use it to get out of covering you??? Think about. How cool is it now?

Hector at Tint Designs. Also, one of the reasons for no dark tint on left and right front door glasses is to protect law enforcement officers, so they can see inside when they pull over a motorist.

Tinted windows in the front of a vehicle make it unsafe for pedestrians, other motorists and the police when they approach the car for enforcement purposes. The people with these dark front windows know it is illegal. They are aggressively ignoring a law that others comply with in the public good. There should be more enforcement, not less. If I were in law enforcement I would order everyone out of such vehicles for any traffic stop before I approached the car.

I highly recommend Tint Designs at 306 E Cota St. (805) 560-8468 Hector's been tinting car windows for a long time and pays great attention to details. Bring your car down, talk to him, and I think you'll get a good vibe.

Judging from the sheer number of very dark windows, whatever laws exist aren't heavily enforced.

California laws as to tinting do not apply to out of state vehicles. Just as out of state vehicles do not have to have a front license plate. Which probably explains why so many out of state plates are expired and still driving around here.

Just about all the very dark tints I've seen were on AZ, NV, TX or FL tagged vehicles.

Observed in the Bay Area, almost every car in the carpool lane had tinted windows -- making it impossible to see if there were in fact a real "carpool" - two or more persons in the auto.

Its actually not illegal. The passenger and driver side can have tint but allow 88 percent of light through. The windshield can have tint on the top 6 inches

For the front side windows, the tint material alone must have 88% light transmittance, with a combined light transmittance of 70% when applied to the factory glass (since factory glass may have some tinting already). The driver is also supposed to carry a signed certification from the tint installer stating that the tinting meets the requirements of the law. If the back windows are tinted, then you must have both side mirrors, which is the law for anything interfering with your rear view, such as a camper/shell, etc.

LM- doesn't it have something to do with how many mirrors you can see out of?

It is illegal for the front and driver/passenger side to be tinted. Super unsafe for walkers and bikers when the driver/passenger sides are tinted. Would love it if you reconsidered. And everyone else for that matter. Thanks.
