Does anyone know what happened to Café del Sol? Some years ago apparently there was a sign on their door saying they were closed but would open the next day, but they never opened again.

My friends who grew up in Montecito were recently in town and they were disappointed that Peabody's and Café del Sol are gone.

What Happened to Café del Sol?

It's now a private club. The new owners are the owners of LA's Magic Castle. Some time ago it was reported that they were going to open on a restricted access basis but then got into issues with the City over un-permitted building modifications. It finally opened in February - https://www.independent.com/2019/02/21/magic-castle-cabaret-opens/

usually when a restaurant is struggling, they first don't pay income taxes then they don't pay employee taxes....hard to get back on your feet with the "vig" on those items

What Happened to Café del Sol?

The original owner failed to pay his taxes for 5 years and thus had his liquor license suspended. In Sept. 2014 the new owners' employees put out a plea on Facebook for donations to restore the license with the hope of reopening the Fri. after the closure. Not surprisingly that didn't happen.

What I wonder is why they went out of business. A sign on the door said "Closed today but open tomorrow". But, they never did reopen "tomorrow". Something happened to have them close forever. The Café was very successful in upper Montecito by Pierre La Fond's and also after they moved to the Bird Refuge.

They closed about 5 years ago, did some special events only for another 6 months, and then were gone. I think a caterer now occupies the spot, again, hosting special events, and using the kitchen to support catering.
