Does anyone know if Our Daily Bread bakery closed? I know their restaurant closed in 2018, but now we are unable find the bread in any of the usual grocery stores.

Thanks.

Next bakery: D'Angelos! yummm. 25 W. Gutierrez. Not convenient. =================== Helena Ave bakery. Also not convenient. 131 Anacapa Ste. C. =================== Is this the one owned by the Lucky Penny/Lark/Loquita? The bread at Loquita was fantastic, shatteringly crispy with a good interior.

And, their coffee was always luke warm

Yes, all their croissants, their bagels from IV Bagels and the cranberry tarts, cookies and avocado toast are in house. If they're too busy The Daily Grind is the next stop for Renaud's croissants or on up to Gelson's for all things French but weaker Lattes.

Yes, they closed. They weren't making enough dough. They kneaded to rise to the occasion but alas, it was a half-baked operation so it fell flat. Any way you slice it, the closure leaves a sour taste.

I buy gluten free baguettes at Von's, Turnpike/Hollister. Delicious and not expensive. I make tiny sandwiches from the sliced baguette. Very special treat!

I was really bummed they closed too, but they should have just stuck to making awesome bread! We went for breakfast one time when they started offering food, and it was only mediocre. I had a sinking suspicion then and there that they would close soon, and I regret that I was correct. Are there any other local bakeries where one can stroll in and buy baguettes and other breads baked that day?

It was worse than mediocre...it was as expensive as Renauds but completely without flavor. The dining experience was also brusque and felt like sitting in the middle of the freeway median.

some people bought it from the original owners. those people tried to change things and ran it into the ground. very sad. all sandwich chops in town are suffering the consequences too. i read that they reached out to the original owners for help, but it was too late....

Want good bread? Make your own. Cost about $1 a loaf to make at home once you buy the ceramic cast iron pot, about $40 at Walmart. https://www.simplysogood.com/crusty-bread/

They tried to do something besides being a bakery/bread maker which is what pushed them over the edge. Everyone is trying to his the jackpot of high profit. It is not enough apparently to have a reliable income and provide a local service.

Is this what you mean? =============================================== Wikipedia "In United States real estate business, "net lease" is a term used for an arrangement in which the tenant or lessee is responsible for paying, in addition to base rent, some or all of the recoverable expenses related to real-estate ownership. As the rent collected under a net lease is net of expenses, the base rent tends to be lower than rent charged under a gross lease. Net lease types include single net, double net, and triple net leases, depending on the number of items they include. The term "net lease" often being used as a shorthand expression for any of these arrangements. The three most common expenses charged back in this fashion, often called the "three nets", are property taxes, insurance, and maintenance.[1] A triple net lease that includes the three nets is particularly common and is often abbreviated in writing as "NNN lease", but is still pronounced as "triple net lease""

Handlebar is quality? I've been there, yuck. It's in your perception. Like you said it's a hipster place, marketed that way, so your brain tricks your tastebuds into believing it's actually good. That's how marketing works.

The coffee and such I got at Handlebar was not "quality". It's just considered a place to be/be seen.

The very busy Handlebar tends to prove her point. Very near to Daily Bread, same hipster clientele but actually successful because of the quality product.

Right - when you charge exorbitantly high prices like Plum Goods does for stuff you can get for cheaper, you have the privilege to say rents aren't high - b/c for their overpriced store they probably aren't, relatively speaking.

Amy Cooper of Plum Goods has stated in interviews that SB rents are not high and not the reason for failing businesses.

So very true. This is at least partially related to the amount of money earned that is used to pay rent. It is simply outstripped the percentage of revenue that leaves enough for a livelihood. Before the 90's you could open literally any business, send your kids to school and make a decent living. Now, a REIT owns the property you're in and it has one thing in mind. Extraction. Additionally, NNN contracts put all the extraneous costs also on the lessee. This is not a joke, but anyone still in business doing what they love is seriously only still in business because they love it. Business plans alone, Go/No Go decision making suggests most ideas are only fantasy at this point. That is, if you want to make a decent living at it. Otherwise? Dream away.

They thrived to a greater extent when they were at the old location on East Canon Perdido. A great loss to we bread lovers no matter the location.

They were not the easiest to be in partnership with. Do you remember the Main Squeeze? According to a partner in that venture they were impossible to get along with. Dissolution of that partnership, however, gave us the Natural Cafe which is still going strong today. Still, the husband was an awesome baker and it's a shame he didn't apprentice anyone to take over from him.

Yes, they thrived at their first location for a long time. Unfortunately, the owners of C'est Cheese went behind their backs when it was time for their lease to be renewed, and offered the landlords more for the space. This forced them out and to the new location, which just wasn't as good. I've boycotted C'est Cheese ever since. Not cool.

With every other person these days apparently suffering from Celiac, the bread business in a town with big city rents is practically impossible. Too bad, they had some really great breads but as another said, its a tough, tough business.

Sadly, yes. They had such wonderful offerings, whenever family was in town I'd get croissants there, you can't find too many places with good ones here. Seems like everything good closes here. I wonder what will go into that space.

Yes, fully closed. No longer any wholesale either. Where does one replace their excellent ciabatta loaves?
