FIRST post of Roger's, at bottom of page, shows that dog IS IN CUSTODY. Technically, this is NOT a stray bite. The dog will be in quarantine. Chances of rabies? So tiny. As dog is in custody it will be quarantined, as owner has already demonstrated an inability to control the dog. Dog owner might come forward, then vax history will be established. PLEASE don't freak out. You have no idea how often this happens. PLEASE DO vax & license your dog so you and they are not part of an upset like this!

What I meant was that a "stray bite" in animal control means a dog who is stray after biting. A search bulletin is put out, if not public. Sometimes it is made public.

It is called "Fear Aggression" when a dog who is scared reacts by nipping or biting. Imagine being a dog and your only defense is your teeth. "Well meaning" people are often nipped or bitten by fear aggressive dogs because not everyone can read dog language properly. Do not approach a dog if you're not sure how it is going to react. It is advisable to look to see if the dog is showing any signs of fear or anxiety: Flattened ears. Tail tucked between the hind legs. Cowering. Lip licking. Yawning. Raised hair on the back of the neck. Avoiding eye contact/averting the eyes. Far too many people seem to think that because a dog is wagging its tail, that indicates the dog is friendly. Not so. Dogs can and will wag their tails out of anxiety or fear. DO NOT EVER try to grab a dog by its collar if that dog is not known to you. I have had owners tell me "Oh, yes. He wants you to pet him. Go ahead and pet him," when the dog is standing with teeth bared and growling at me. I have had the friendliest-seeming dogs try to take a bite out of me. You never know. If you find a "stray" it is best to let the dog come to you. I am not at all surprised that two people were nipped/bitten. Particularly with tiny dogs people think it's okay to pick up those dogs. It's a mystery to me. Little dogs can oft times be the most defensive. And-----by the way-----a bite is when the skin is broken and truly injured; I would say injured to the point of needing stitches. A nip can draw blood but is hardly comparable to a real dog bite. If I had a nickel for every time someone has used the word "bite" when the incident in question was merely a nip . . .

Good points. Small dogs feel vulnerable, and are vulnerable. We have always had large dogs, but now have both. It took some time to understand that aggression can be fear based.. duh! In their minds it's either defend yourself or submit and be eaten. This is often how they react when someone comes beelining up to them.. they are more likely to feel threatened (people hesitate to do this to our big dog, hmm, why is that). Heck, I don't like being charged up on by potentially threatening dogs/people either- And there are plenty of bullies out there in all forms and species.

It is a dog owners responsibility to control the dog, I have been running in the area and the owner let a dog lunge it may because they did not control it. People do not have to work around dogs, dogs should be controlled by their owners. We have three dogs, and one we do not take out in public or to the beach where is it will be overstimulated, yet we bring it to remote hiking trails and parks to let it out. You cannot keep making excuses for animals and take no responsibility, I’m so sorry to tell you this. Please try and spread responsibility and not excuses.

I just remembered...... A Yorkie (Yorkshire Terrier), keeps escaping it's yard... 1600 blk Shoreline Dr. Was posted on Craigslist couple days ago, which was the 2nd escape. 1st escape, the Yorkie was caught and ended up at the Shelter..

Depending on the severity of the bites, the dog may be deemed vicious and put down by the City/County shelter unless the owner can transfer it to a sanctuary outside of the City. If they are minor nips with not much broken skin then the owner may be allowed to get the dog back after a 10-day rabies quarantine period. Owner has to pay for boarding the dog during this time, plus additional fines and fees depending on whether the dog was licensed and vaccinated.

What part of "Depending on the severity of the bites" did you misunderstand? In the case I was involved in, first quarantine was at home, 2nd owner paid to keep dog at vet, 3rd dog was housed at City/County shelter for months with no exercise until the case was resolved. Owner had to send dog to out of City Sanctuary to save its life. Bites by this dog were Level 2 out of 3 levels, more than a nip but not grabbing and holding on. I say City/County shelter because the County shelter houses the City vicious and stray dogs per their MOU. This costs the City about $300K per year. City pays for their own AC officers who are part of the City Police Dept.

Most of your factual info is true, but the tone is over-reactive. Most bite quarantines are done in the dog's home. Hundreds of bites a year are dealt with by both City & County. There is no SB City shelter; City dogs without owners who have bit are housed at the County Animal Shelter on Overpass Rd., held under authority of SB City Animal Control. As are City dogs with owners who cannot fulfill quarantine requirements. If a dog owner can prove that the dog is rabies vaccinated, home quarantine is a possibility, if the yard is contained and owner promises not to remove dog from premises (NO DOG WALKS) for 2 weeks. There are a lot of dog bites everywhere, even more than you think.

Many in-home and in-shelter bite quarantines happen every year. MANY. VERY FEW become involved in vicious dog investigations. Animal Control knows and loves dogs. Most bites are minor, physically AND BEHAVIORALLY. Like Chihuahuas, herding dogs, too rowdy play situations with kids. Severity of bite is not the only data considered. Context is crucial.

Dog will be transported back to the Harbor Patrol office where it will be placed in a cage until Animal Control picks it up.
