Retired Law Enforcement Officer Sentenced for Hit and Run

Santa Barbara County District Attorney Joyce E. Dudley announced [Friday] the sentencing of Donald Paul McCaffrey on misdemeanor charges of hit and run and resisting, obstructing, or delaying a law enforcement officer.
In July of 2016, McCaffrey, was involved in an accident and then ran from police during their investigation of the collision. Numerous Santa Barbara Police Department officers searched the area around Santa Barbara and Anapamu Streets for McCaffrey who evaded the police for approximately an hour before surrendering. On October 9, 2018 a jury convicted McCaffrey of all charges. McCaffrey was a retired law enforcement officer.
The Honorable Judge Hill, of the Santa Barbara Superior Court, then sentenced McCaffrey to 15 days in the county jail and three years of probation with multiple related terms and conditions including 50 hours of community work service.
Prosecuting Attorney Morgan Lucas expressed her appreciation to the jury and to her fellow public safety officers in stating: “We are here to uphold the law, not to use our knowledge of the law to evade responsibility for violating it."
