We were walking from the El Encanto to the Westside Friday night from 7:30 to 8:30 and kept seeing flashes in the sky, to the southwest. The source of the flashes was obscured by the hills in the foreground. Anybody know what was causing them?

Flashes in the Sky?

When I saw this Ed headline I thought, "Lightning." (not "lightening")

Flashes in the Sky?

The cells were falling apart as they entered the eastern channel or were making a left turn and heading out to sea when encountering the Island.

We thought it might be lightning, but the sky was clear as far as we could see. Nice to wake up to the sound of a brief shower last night. Thanks for the (non-snarky) answers!

The snark in these replies is ridiculous. I was thinking the same thing - was downtown, sky was clear for miles, and we saw a flash to the northwest. Thanks for asking the (not stupid) question for those of us who are not omnipotent ;)

We were out in Palm Desert last week and the evening heat lightning shows were spectacular. They occurred twice. The one display lasted for 90 minutes. They were inland, over Coachella/Indio area. Papers reported 700 strikes but fortunately, no damage.

Lightening in the Channel. There's a decent rain/thunderstorm system that's been rotating just south of us for the last several hours. The cut off looks to be right at the Ventura County line.... not fair!

We got sprinkles for ~15 minutes after 10pm last night on the Eastside and Riviera. Like the OP, I did a night-time urban hike across town, nice warm night for that.
