Santa Barbara was named the #1 Best Place to the Live in the U.S. for the Weather in 2018 in a recent ranking by U.S. News & World Report.

According to the report, Santa Barbara offers fewer than 79 cloudy days per year, on average. The mean number of clear or partly cloudy days is 286, with an average of six days below freezing and three days above 90 degrees. Although I'm pretty sure we blew that last average out of the water in recent weeks.

Number 2 on the list is Salinas, California, lettuce capital of the world and home to John Steinbeck, just 230'ish miles north of Santa Barbara. The report stated that Salinas offers just six nights below freezing and three above 90 degrees, on average, throughout the year.

Number 3 was given to San Diego, and 4th was tied between San Francisco and San Jose, with 6th being Honolulu.

Clearly, it's the coastal California cities that dominated this report, to which any Californian would reply, "No, duh."

So congratulations Santa Barbara! This might be a hard honor to accept given the extreme heat we experienced this past week with the lack of air-conditioned buildings, but an honor nonetheless.

Goleta is #1, because the numbers gathered for Santa Barbara temps/weather are from aggregated sources at the Santa Barbara Airport...in Goleta. Hey, Goleta, "We're Number One!" signs and flags should be put up along Hollister!

Wow ... #1 in the nation, above Honolulu. Another notch in the SB travel promo's belt. but, don't rest on your laurels SB! When the tourists come for the great weather they will be driving on pot-holed roads, attempting to shop among the shuttered State Street businesses and the homeless, and (at times) seaweed covered beaches. Santa Barbara is a 'gem', but even gems need polishing after years of wear.

Our coastal mountain range running east west gives us sunnier weather than Ventura/Oxnard. Can't tell you how many days I drive from the marine layer conditions in Vta back to SB and the sun pops out just past Carpenteria.

Having lived here for over 30 years, I don't remember many winters where we had 6 days below freezing. I would expect the average to be less than two. Certainly I remember most summers having more than 3 days above 90.

It appears the report isn't using city data but instead the typical MSA (Metropolitan Statistical Area) that US Census data is based around. I believe that include places outside SB-Goleta like Lompoc, Buellton, Santa Maria, etc. So the temperature data used in the rankings may be an aggregate for our MSA.
