Weird call. Two separate Railroad engineers have reported a subject lying motionless near the tracks in Montecito near Depot Road and twice SBSO has been unable to locate the subject.

I agree with many here in SB as this problem has turned traveling on Amtrak into a total hassle many times. When an Amtraks strikes a person the typical delay, according to Amtrak officials, is between 3 - 4.5 hours. We were on a southbound Amtrak a few months back that struck a person who had committed a crime in Burbank, then fled & jumped in front of the train to kill himslef. The delay was 7.5 hours! Union Pacific & Amtrak need to be proactive in protecting the rails better.

The people I feel sorry for are the train engineers who can't avoid hitting those intent on committing suicide. It's traumatic for them. Some religions say suicide is a sin, and it may be illegal. IMO, if it's done in a way that doesn't hurt others, it may be a reasonable last resort. Who can say what someone is suffering with no hope of relief? For some, each day is an act of extreme bravery.

Judging from all the homeless whose encampments line the tracks from Goleta through Montecito, I am surprised more people aren't killed by passing trains. Union Pacific needs to get these encampments gone. Once the encampments are cleared out, they can concentrate on all the mattresses and tons of trash lining the tracks. Great viewing from all trains passing through the American Riviera.
