Water Rescue for Surfer in Distress Off Isla Vista
By the edhat staff
Santa Barbara County Firefighters responded to a distress surfer off the Isla Vista Coast early Wednesday evening.
At 5:03 p.m., crews arrived in the 6800 block of Del Playa Drive and identified a surfer in the water approximately 200 yards off the coast with a discarded surfboard on beach.
Two rescue water crafts were launched from Goleta Beach and a drone was deployed to keep track of the surfer.
Rescuers were able to pull the male surfer in his 40's onto the water craft and return to Goleta Beach.
According to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, the leash broke while surfing causing the board to wash ashore and the surfer to become stranded.
The surfer was evaluated by medics and released on his own accord.

Mar 23, 2023 09:27 PMWhat's the difference between reconnaissance and recognizance?
“When a judge allows a person accused of a crime to go free without posting bail, based on the defendant's promise to show up for trial, that person is released on his or her own 'recognizance. ' Not 'reconnaissance,' which is a look around to gain information.”

Mar 23, 2023 07:46 AMI would have expected the surfer to have the ability to swim to the shore after the leash broke.

Mar 23, 2023 08:56 AMSurf was rather large yesterday afternoon, easily overhead, big tide swing, and clearing winds. Not mellow conditions for sure, but being able to self rescue is also very important.

Mar 24, 2023 07:51 AMExactly. Can't imagine they/she makes more than pennies an hour if that running edhat.
If it really bothers you, email edhat, point out the error and provide the correction. I've done that several times.

Mar 23, 2023 09:32 PMEdhat corrected "reconnaissance" and replaced it with "on his own accord." Correct phrase is "of his own accord."

Mar 23, 2023 08:08 AMEdhat gets a break from me, very small bootstrapped staff working into the wee hours, these things happen. What's really funny is reading other local publications and news stations who have large staffs, a lot of ad $$$ and donor funding and they still make these types of errors.

Mar 23, 2023 07:33 AMThe reconnaissance error came directly from a tweet by Scott Safechuck, the County Fire PIO. He’s either grammatically challenged or fell victim to the autocorrect feature
