It is normal for commercial fisherman to work alone, they don’t make enough money to hire help sometimes and most are very trained at sea. Accidents happen, hope he makes a full recovery and can get the boat off without all the city fines.

Clarification: Every captain I’ve worked for has story(s) about the time they were out on the ocean ALONE, an accident happened and they were certain the end was happening.

From my experience as a deckhand, it’s greed, they only want to work 6 months, but still make the equivalent of what a professional office worker would make in a full year.

Generally deckhands are considered cheap, replaceable and a nuisance.

Every captain I’ve worked for has story(s) about the time they were certain the end was happening.

Arrrrrrgggggg. I gave the orders to me crew to fire the cannons on her sterns side on these ocean waters, then we bordered her to take the richly possessions that was on aboard her. That crew fought bravely against us. Then I gave the orders to me crew to fire the cannons on her for the final end and what was left of her she landed on these shores. We set fast sail before the Kings Navy would chase after me ship and crew.

I hope he has friends who can get the boat out promptly with as little damage as possible.

Is it common for a boat like that, A fishing boat, to have only 1 person on board while operating? No experience here……

As usual you are incorrect. It’s very common for them to run with one person and is not dangerous at all.

Looks like a lobster boat, not a fishing boat. They stop to drop or pull up traps so it's common to do it alone. I've seen it that way often when out on my dive boat.

Good question. It’s unusual to run any commercial fishing boat solo. It’s hard, and potentially dangerous work.

Millimesa- Thank you for the info. It must have been horrifying to be injured, trapped, in pain and unable to control the moving vessel. At least it beached rather than powering out to sea. Hope for a full recovery of crew and vessel.

Boat had a single captain. A wave caused the captain to be pushed in the fish well and a several hundred pound ice box fell on top of him. He was trapped and the boat was still in gear so it eventually ran aground. No idea how long he was trapped for.

According to Noozhawk, the SB Fire BC, Coastguard and Harbor Patrol it's a lobster boat and a 4x4 ice chest isn't all that big and it's in awfully close to have been a squid boat.

Probably not a lobster boat, as it lacks the proper markings… If it was a lobster boat it should have an LXXXXX marking on the sides (where X a number). Also it’s not typical for lobster boats to carry that much or any ice.

Glad the captain is safe.
