The Santa Barbara City Planning Commission unanimously approved the development plan for the new Police Station.

On Thursday, the commission reviewed the main land use, which is appealable to the City Council. The next step in the process is design review.

“This is a very exciting time for the City, for the Design Team, and most importantly for the Police Department. After four years we are one step closer to moving the Police Department into a new facility,” said Public Works Principal Project Manager, Brad Hess.

The project is expected to begin construction in 2024 with a completion date in 2026.

I am so glad that there will be four bicycle parking spots. I am willing right now to start a poll on how much the final tab will be to give the officers a new coed locker room. I say $123,000,000. What say you?

There's a different rendering shown in the noozhawk article. It also says "Commissioners unanimously approve downtown project but ask for more solar panels and softer, ‘Santa Barbara-style’ edges on its tower"

And this is appalling and infuriating: "The commission asked the architects to add more solar panels. The design team previously had included more, but the Architectural Board of Review requested fewer because of the visual impact along the Cota Street side of the building."
I'll be writing the ABR about this misplaced concern.

I support this new police building. I've worked in a crappy, old, crowded and very hot office and it is very unpleasant.

It would be well worth designing the building to look good underneath the solar panels. Once the solar fad passes, and the panels wear out and get sent overseas to safely and responsibly “recycle” the toxic materials they contain the building might look a little bare. Then again, that would be a great time to start this process all over again to do a redesign.
