Just little things like minority voting rights, LGBTQ rights, or anything else that good old Clarence and his regressive reactionary buddies doesn't find in his weird interpretation of our constitution.
Yes, be afraid because politicians told you so and the need you afraid to fund their campaigns and vote for them. Weird interpretations of the constitution got us Roe Wade and this mess we’re in rather than politicians actually doing their job and legislating this decades ago.
How is it appropriate or logical to attack "the patriarchy" for this stuff? I have seen this slur put forth by some apparent feminists upset with the Roe reversal et al. But a woman justice voted for that result whereas the original Roe decision itself was signed by six old men and concurred in by a couple of other male justices. We do a disservice to the cause of progress by lapsing into such jargon and thoughts.
Literally the opposite, they gave more power to the people. Anyone who feels the need to sit this one out would have probably sat down with the British while others went off to fight for our independence and earn the freedoms we currently enjoy.
Regardless of your feelings on the matter you’re incorrect, it was something granted by an unelected body on shaky legal grounds and now has been given to the citizens, individual voters, NOT the state government.
Right wing talking points are deeply dishonest. We fought a civil war over whether state legislatures should be able to deprive people of their civil rights, and one of the consequences was the Fourteenth Amendment, which the right wing ideologues dismiss with their phony "originalist" doctrine. Regressive misogynist throwback Joseph Alito notes that women and their issues aren't mentioned in that Amendment and weren't on the minds of those who drafted it--funny thing, since they were all men--women had no vote or say. For Alito and anon here, that's as it should be.
And these red state legislatures with their gerrymandering and voter suppression are not "the people" and do not represent "the people", the great majority of whom oppose their policies.
Interesting take on our freedom that we take for granted. I would like to ask the wrongfully jailed Britney Griner her views on freedumb in the USA. Please contact your rep, senator, and the WH to press for her release...NOW!!!
VOR: I should have used the word "detained" rather than jailed:
"WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration has determined that WNBA star Brittney Griner is being wrongfully detained in Russia, meaning the United States will more aggressively work to secure her release even as the legal case against her plays out, the State Department said Tuesday."
Personally, I cannot belive she decided to smuggle 50 hashish vape cartridges into Russia. I suppose she may have thought that she did not have to follow the law. I assume that she is learning that the rules do apply to her, at least in Russia.
VOR supporting Putin - lock people away forever for marijuana - typical Republiturd extremist standpoint. This is who we are fighting = Russians and the GOP who hold the same extremist viewpoints as a dictator. Still not getting why the Trumplicans love dictators - but it makes sense why they promote the Big Lie.....
Voice of Putin: Not only are you judging her guilty before proven innocent. You are taking the word of Russian airport police over that of a US Olympian and stellar athlete. In addition to sexually abusing toddlers and bombing and looting civilians, Russian security forces are some of the most corrupt in the world and no stranger to hostage-taking on bogus charges. I suppose you're one of the odd Trumpies that respects Putin for being a strongman and seeing him ride horses shirtless and poison journalists makes you feel warm inside.
Chillin & The General: No one disputes that the 50-plus hashish cartridges are considered trafficking in Russia. No one is questioning that she was planning to sell and distribute the vape cartridges as it's obvious to even the casual observer that the number alone would not be for personal consumption. Basically, she is being looked at by Russia as a drug trafficking drug dealer. Nothing more and nothing less. She still needs your support as she is an American in a Russian prison. This has nothing to do with Trump, Trump supporters, conservatives, the GOP, patriots, and so on. It has everything to do with one of our fellow citizens schlepping drugs into a foreign country. You have to ask yourself, "What was she thinking??!!??"
Remember the theme song from the movie 'The Falcon and the Snowman'? It's a Bowie/Metheny collaboration: This Is Not America. As a side note from the article '24 Countries That Have the Death Penalty for Drug Trafficking':
"Drug trafficking, unlike drug consumption, is considered a very serious crime in most parts of the world and is usually punishable by several years of imprisonment. In some cases, even capital punishment is invoked. Trafficking is defined by carrying a specified quantity of drugs like marijuana, methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine etc, and the punishments depend on the quantity, geographical location, the intent of the offender, and whether or not minors were involved."
Baby: Are we supposed to take the word of the Russian police at face value? You and Voice of Stupidity are jumping to conclusions here. We're talking about police who routinely beat up people for peacefully protesting, plant evidence, and make up charges.
MarcelK/Chillin/AlexBlue: I'll admit that the facts in the case are not completely clear, but Ms. Griner's freedom is now limited, and that's no joke. Two cartridges or fifty cartridges, does not matter (there were t-w-o vape pipes and many multiple cartridges to the best of my knowledge), she is detained in prison because of what is rightfully or wrongfully being claimed. We can sit here all day with the back and forth, and you can call me names and play games, but don't forget who is in jail right now. The four of us can look back on this one day and have a cold beer or glass of wine or shot of bourbon or whatever you want, but for now, it's best to present a common front against tyranny. God bless and please be good to others and treat them well.....even when you completely disagree.
Babycakes, if you say that "no one disputes that she had 50 vape cartridges and was planning to sell and distribute the vape cartridges", then you are carrying water for a totally corrupt police state by accepting their claims and therefore implying that her detention is justified.
Babycakes, who are you talking to? I haven't called you any names. You do love to tell people how to comment, and then you dodge and run away rather than answering questions about your thinking and tell people to just reeeeeelaaax. As if you haven't written volumes on this site.
ALEX - he and VOICE seem to be using the same playbook. If anyone calls someone out for posting a verifiable lie (intentionally false statement), they howl and cry about all the "hate" from the left and then call us "libtards" or "idiots." Not saying BABY has said those things, but the constant conflation of "hate" with being called a "liar" for continually posting verifiable and blatant misrepresentations of fact while refusing to back it up, is getting old. I'm guilty as hell of over posting here, I own it, but I can't (at least only during weekdays before 6pm usually) just stay quiet when I see the constant barrage of lies (intentionally false statements) with the concomitant complaints of "hate" against the conservative posters here.
Is this about abortion or independence? I get it, Roe is getting challenged and that sucks, but don’t drag the rest down too - our independence, freedom of speech, democracy, etc. We have it good here compared with everyone else, and it’s because people fought for it. Show some respect for that too.
You do know the Supreme Court is unelected by design and has been since day one?
"Maybe better than many third world countries dominated by religion, but not compared to the modern developed world."
You are going to need to give names of countries. Are we talking about Iceland or Brazil?
Many liberal countries have gestational restrictions that exceed most American states
This cartoon suggests that all women support abortion while only men oppose it. The truth is more nuanced. A Pew study found that 62% of women want abortion to be legal compared with 56% of men. Not as sharp of a divide as one might think.
It's hard to celebrate seeing that the far right extremists are still pushing a coup - a big lie - - and there is no justice yet for everything that happened on January 6, 2020. It's hard to celebrate because we are at war with the fascist-right cancer in our country. It's hard to celebrate when the evangelical far-right extremists control the Supreme court. Ginni Thomas was OK rounding up Democrats and sending them to GITMO. And now the smarmy extremist Catholic Supreme Court is pushing their control of woman - and threaten to further discriminate against LGBTQ and even take away birth control. Not really caring about fireworks this year - focusing on the enemy within our country.
I'm spending time right now with family in a rural red area in a purple state. I definitely had to bite my tongue a few times. The love of Trump and DeSantis is strong here.
Of course they are Catholic too, the family members.
The Roe v. Wade thing should be decided by individuals not government--or perhaps only those who could get pregnant should be allowed to vote on it locally. I spoke with an elderly and kind couple this morning who get all their news from FOX--no other source except friends--and don't check any of it. He is all-in for repeal, she is (quietly) not. Everyone the right worships: Jesus, the founding fathers, Lincoln, heck even Reagan. Would completely despise the crazy hillbilly nonsense the GOP has become.
I have noticed up here in No. County many more trucks driven by young men bearing one or two large flags flapping in the wind. Is this even legal? I don't remember seeing this in the past. More intimidation than patriotism, i fear.
