Caltrans announced all southbound lanes of Highway 101 at Cat Canyon Road will close at 1:00 p.m. today, as requested by the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
Just before noon, Caltrans posted a "SIG ALERT" announcing CHP is working in the area and requested the roadway to be closed for 30 minutes to one hour.
A detour is available via southbound Highway 135.
According to the CHP, law enforcement is being called out to investigate a suspicious item that was found off the roadway that may or may not be an explosive.
This is a developing story.

May 29, 2022 06:57 AMJust imagine the criticism if it was something explosive and a response was not mounted!
Damned if they do, damned if they don't.

May 28, 2022 01:10 PMIt was probably something like a petrified Big Mac, otherwise the authorities would have blabbed all over the place how they saved the world. Time to come clean and let us know what it was.

May 28, 2022 09:16 AMSo, do we assume it was a boondoggle, a false alarm? Interesting there is no description of what someone reported as suspicious, and then no word that it was nothing. For how many thousands of people who were inconvenienced you'd think they'd release more info.

May 28, 2022 09:54 AMThat was supposed to say: PSTARSR ... My favorite quote from the noozhawk "Update" was/is "The bomb team from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene to examine the item, Barriga said.". Seems to be the resolve? So a closure for 4 1/2 hours and...? maybe Roger knows?

May 28, 2022 09:37 AMPit - I'm having trouble discerning if that was sarcasm; humor; or an attempt to be helpful? otherwise pretty impressive lack of or complete useful information? I tried but couldn't match it. Rather long 101 delay w/no followup....

North and southbound Highway 101 lanes north of Los Alamos close temporarily Friday due to a possible bomb
KEYT
LOS ALAMOS, Calif. – All southbound and northbound Highway 101 lanes at Cat Canyon Road are closed again for an investigation of a possible bomb, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Caltrans said the lanes were closed first at 1:00 p.m., and then again just before 3:00 p.m. when the Santa Barbara County Sheriffs Office arrived to investigate the scene.
Workers closed down the highway due to a possible home made bomb near Cat Canyon that a Caltrans worker found on Friday morning at 10:07 a.m., according to CHP
CHP officers said they responded to the scene and set up a command post, and notified the County Sheriffs Office.
This second closure is supposed to be lifted at 4:00 p.m., according to CHP.
However, Caltrans said there is no estimated time for reopening.
The first closure at 1:00 p.m. was supposed to last about 30 minutes, according to Jim Shivers, spokesman for CalTrans District 5.
Northbound lanes were diverted to Highway 135 at Los Alamos, and the southbound lanes exited at Union Valley Parkway in Santa Maria and onto Highway 135, Shivers said.
As of 1:49 p.m., all lanes were reopened, before closing again around 3:00 p.m.
