Intense Rain

It's raining really hard right now (around 9:45pm) in downtown SB. Are other areas, specifically the burn areas, experiencing this? I'd worry about flooding and debris flow or is this as intense as officials expected?

Rain and danger, helpful and reassuring Edhatters, John and Shasta! John Wiley, when you show up on Edhat for fires or rain (mudslides), I feel comforted. Thank you, and thank Shasta. “A Jedi uses the Force (Edhat) for knowledge and defense, never for attack.”

How much rain fell last night? John Wiley, how much did you get at #101/#154? Others?

Thanks to John, I've posted another link in the hydrology section of the SBitZ.net weather websites. It's a Ventura County water shed map that includes SB County. Click the link and select a 2 day rainfall in the upper left, then zoom and scroll to the Santa Barbara area. Now I've taught you how to fish....but I'll give you the answer anyway. A little more than 1.3" of rain fell above Montecito last night. We've got more precipitation tomorrow so I'll be looking at the Vandenberg animated doppler radar, the 8km animated IR map, and the rainfall accumulation map.

John Wiley and Shasta Guy, thank you.

Looks like Ventura's ok too, though I can't stay awake any more to wait for the rain to stop there. It's just started to taper off in the hills South of Lake Casitas where it went from .33" in an hour, down to .32" just now. Maybe some problems on 101 below there? The V.C. rainfall site I used (if Shasta Guy hasn't already added it on SBitZ.NET): http://vcwatershed.net/fws/gmap.html

That's a good idea to add that link. Excessive rainfall in Ventura County can affect us up here.

Upper Romero took 0.20" and Cold Spring took 0.19" in the last hour. Hopefully the soil will hold.

S.coast rain lets up in the next hour judging by radar, but Ventura may have been hit pretty hard and fast in the past hour with more to come. Hope they're ok.

It's coming down good and steady in the upper east. This kinda snuck up on us. We now have a flood advisory until 2am. The ridge above Montecito has taken up to 0.60" in the last three hours. Although not intense, it means the soil is just getting more saturated. With additional rain coming later in the week I'd start thinking about being prepared if I lived below the Thomas burn. Thanks again for being on the look out, John.

One more item about this Wednesday night rain: SB County gauge above Summerland is showing 0.37" in the last three hours. Not nearly a debris flow number but enough to pay attention if there's a stronger microburst on the way.

Some solid rain, fairly heavy at times, 101@154. Took a look at aviation radar just now and it looks like there's potential for at least an hour more of it including some headed for the burn areas. If anyone in Montecito or Carp can report in this topic we can all keep an eye on it. On the radar animation of the last hour, most of the stronger rain has been near shore but tapering off as it moves onshore. Hopefully that will continue to be the pattern.

It's so awful that instead of celebrating rain in this dire time of drought we instead dread it.

John Wiley's site SBitZ.net is hosting SHASTA GUY here: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/sbitz/z8AlR_mqfK8. Once there, be prepared for a graduate level class. If you study, and I do mean study, each link SHASTA GUY has provided, an A+ is headed your way. This one is incredible, scroll down and absorb: http://www.rntl.net/santabarbaracountyfirecams.htm

Lol, guess the downvoters don't appreciate your style of humor. Three cheers for our resident expert, SHASTAGUY!

According to the county rain fall accumulation maps, there's been about 0.30" in the last hour on the ridges above Montecito. The link for this map is posted in the hydrology section of SB weather links at SBitZ.net. These links are there so people can get info directly and assess their own risk. Today's constant rain runs the risk of saturating the soils which may cause it to slump independent of intense rain. Everyone below denuded hillsides needs to pay attention with every storm.
