Santa Barbara County firefighters rescued an injured hiker off Tunnel Trail Saturday afternoon and new reports state the hiker has passed away.

San Marcos High School Student Jake Parks, 17, has been identified as the hiker.

Santa Barbara County firefighters were dispatched to the Tunnel Trail for a reported medical emergency, according to SBCFD spokesperson Mike Eliason.

Initial reports stated an adult male sustained a heat-related emergency approximately 1-2 miles from the trailhead. Crews transported the victim down off the trail and transported him to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for treatment.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office-Coroner’s Bureau is investigating his death, which does not appear to be suspicious.

It's always a sad thing when someone so young dies. I don't understand the need to suggest stupidity. Yes, it was hot on Saturday, but we don't know the details of why the boy had issues and regardless - this is an insensitive comment. Do better.

Hiker Rescued on Tunnel Trail Reportedly Dies

The injured hiker was my 17 year old nephew who died on that mountain, a week away from his high school graduation and his entire life ahead of him. Perhaps you could think about the impact of your words before you ignorantly post something that his Mother, Father and siblings can read. Just a thought? But maybe you’re right, stupid cannot be fixed or silenced in a time where empathy and decorum should be displayed.
