Stabbing on Santa Barbara's Westside?
By an edhat reader
A neighbor of mine near Chino and Islay Streets told me police officers were going door to door today (Friday) asking if anyone had surveillance footage of a street where a stabbing took place earlier this week.
I haven't heard anything about a stabbing other than this and my neighbor didn't have more information. I can't find anything in the news, does anyone know more?

Jan 22, 2022 01:41 PM@3428; I don't know if there is a legislative basis for DoJs action, but it sounds like a State policy or administrative action. The LA Times explained the DoJ's policy this way:
"The department is the latest .. to cut off access to radio communications in response to a CA Department of Justice mandate that required agencies to protect certain personal information from State data bases, such as names, dates of birth, driver's license numbers and other information from the CA Law Enforcement Telecommunications System."
CLETs is what CA LE uses to 'run' people for wants, warrants, vehicle reg etc. The leverage DoJ has includes funding as well as access to their systems, which also includes firearms registration.

Jan 21, 2022 04:28 PMLots happens , even rampant & ostensible drug dealing on 200 block of West Micheltorena.... people report, yet we onow not what's being done. We miss Roger's reports too. Lack of transparency & communication is why problems are proliferating ..people feel frustrated & powerless. Megan Harmon has not responded either. United , concerted effort by We The People is imperative!

Jan 22, 2022 04:10 AMI shouldn't have said "executive order," as that points toward the head of state. If it can be done by order, it may be the head of the state law enforcement agency or head of the state DoJ, not the governor, that has the power to order it to be done.
Can you give us more information on this, JB?

Jan 22, 2022 04:05 AMJB, can you provide more information? Can this be done by executive order or is legislation required?
I'd like to note that anyone can contact their legislators with their concerns, at least tell them you are aware of this action and oppose it.
There is nothing special about "even people like Roger," one simply needs to purchase a scanner and learn how to use it. So far, that is.

Jan 22, 2022 04:03 AMAware, a sincere question: Can you explain your statement "Lack of transparency & communication is why problems are proliferating ..people feel frustrated & powerless."
Which problems are proliferating from lack of communication between which parties?
I'm curious and want to understand your concerns, respectfully.

Jan 21, 2022 11:56 PMAwarehuman; It will only get worse. The CA DoJ is pushing local police agencies to encrypt radio communications, with support from FEMA. San Diego County just did this, blacking out radio monitoring by the media and other scanner users. If this goes forward throughout the state, even people like Roger won't be able to share real-time information on law enforcement activities -what you get will be filtered through police spokespeople at their discretion - or not at all.

Jan 21, 2022 02:53 PMAs a Westside parent, I'm pretty frustrated the police have not sent out any time of warning or information to our neighborhood. Don't they usually give press releases to the media when these types of things happen? I definitely heard the gunshots the other night and would have never known about the stabbing if it weren't for this post. Thank you to edhat and Andrew for posting this and keeping us apprised.

Jan 21, 2022 03:55 PMOdds are it was not a random attack, so the public is not in danger. I truly miss Roger's (weekly? monthly?) summary posts, it was a great insight into what really goes on in our community. Even SBPD's "roundup" posts were nice too, long gone now, although I never appreciated the naming-and-shaming of those presumed innocent.

Jan 21, 2022 02:28 PMAlso, apparently while police were investigating on Chino Street, multiple callers reported hearing gunshots being fired somewhere. The police heard it too. That's all I have, I don't think the police have much more info either

Jan 21, 2022 02:17 PMA friend who lives on Chino told me the same thing this morning. They said the detectives believed it was a road rage and possible gang-affiliated incident. The victim did survive.
Although, the Santa Barbara Police Department should be alerting residents that this happened! Where is their press release or statement on this. There are a ton of children who live in this area, including a daycare center, and parents are really worried!
