What Are These on the Light Posts?

This subject has been raised here before: https://www.edhat.com/news/new-traffic-cameras There are some very informative comments there from EhDat, TagDes, and others, e.g., "the yellow circled device is a 360 pan tilt zoom camera, that is not recording. It is accessed only via the City Traffic Engineer to monitor traffic events through out the city. They are only installed at major roads through the City. During freeway closures, construction, accidents etc.. the engineer can view the camera remotely rather than driving several miles from his office (where he might make signal adjustments to better help traffic flow) "

The GridSmart system allows real time adjustments to light traffic light timing to expedite traffic flow throughout the day.

To "cruise State" in the late 1960s, we'd start in Goleta, and depending on your car, if you hit the perfect speed (oddly always under the speed limit!) we could make it all to the wharf (and sometimes back!) and never hit a red light!

It's an UGLY installation. With this City's focus on aesthetics one would think that they could have come up with a better looking option if they really thought the cameras were necessary.

It's only a matter of time before a couple of 12 YO boys with pellet rifles get caught plinking at one of these mysterious devices. The subsequent crime report will detail exactly what these light post attachments are.

Jeez - it's a legitimate question. If you don't know the answer, don't muck up the thread with your dumb "smart" answers.

Ginger, evidently you can't comprehend what has been said. If there is situation needing to change the timing phases it can be done by some of the before noted people. The CHP, PD and Inspectors can only set the controller to flashing red . They all have the keys but only a tech can change the timing and phasing which has to be done at the controller. Secondly all of the signals are controlled by the other cameras you see along with the loops imbedded in the pavement. They are all timed for traffic and the timing and phasing change not only during the day but on weekends. Anyone that pays any attention can see which turn lights will be changing and that some change phasing during the day. Surprise, no one is sitting there watching this 24/7/365...they use software and computer programs and actually do quite well. I use the timing and phasing so that the last time I came from 5 points to Alamar I never had to stop once. Sadly some people (several my age ) think it's quite okay to drive 25 in a 35 mph and can end up stopping several times and pissing off the others trying to drive 50. The computer does not no when people don't have a clue kind of like Pitmix.

Old Santa Barbara Proverb . . . Give a pigeon a stop light and it poops for a day. Give a pigeon a traffic cam and it poops for a lifetime!

From the manufacturers website: Single-camera vehicle detection and counting, highway counting and monitoring.

OK TAGDES. So someone is sitting watching a video screen observing traffic flow. Then what are they going to do with that information? Ah, I know. Compile it for future use. Nothing immediately actionable, right? Or perhaps sometimes. Like when there's an accident that doesn't get reported to the police. And that will occur how often around here? Ah, I know, We'll find out from the compiled data.

This is what should be a serious community discussion: why is not (most) every traffic light controlled by traffic sensors? Why when one "breaks" does it take days or weeks to get it re-set/fixed? Why does one have to stop at a signal for 2 minutes waiting to make a left turn when there's not a soul around for miles? As 10 cars are qued up to turn, why does the traffic light turn red when there is one car remaining, waiting to turn? Sitting at a signal idling your internal combustion engine is burning fossil fuel and dumping greenhouse gases and pollution into the air---for no reason. Not my doing. I ride a bike or drive an EV, but just saying.....

Minibeast is correct...they are 360 degree, tilt zoom cameras that do not record. They are for freeway closures or any traffic flow observance when needed. They are not signal controller cameras which must be set by public works techs or PD. As a County Tech and Inspector I also carried the controller keys which one needs to open the traffic signal controller in the case of accidents.

And why do they have to be so crazy high up, sometimes multiple arrays at the same intersection? This is 2021. We have doorbell cameras the size of a stick of gum. Why not just stick one up on the traffic light? Easy-peasy and cheap.

Oh....that's not how it's done.

its not done that way bc of the tech and weather proofing and durability. your little doorbell cam wouldn't last out in the open environment like that. they aren't designed to do that. the robust housing that encases the camera is mostly what we see, whereas the actual camera components inside are probably as small as your doorbell cam. just because it's larger and grey doesn't mean it's not high tech. different applications for different uses.

They are there so the city can hire a few new people to sit and watch traffic cams all day. Then the city will hire a consultant to report on the findings of the data collected. Then the city will hire another consultant to suggest a solution to the problems. Then the city will form a committee to assess the solutions. Then the city will hire a consultant to price out the cost of implementing the chosen solutions. Then the city will award a contract to the highest bidder to implement solutions. Then the city will hire a lawyer to sue said company because said work was not performed correctly. Then the city will deprecate the cameras due to the fact they are no longer compatible with the new systems. Meanwhile the 3 people hired to watch the cams have grown into 6, with 2 managers and a budget in the millions.

Rinse repeat...

In this day and age, video cameras output a signal which might or might not be recorded. For instance, the cameras that people use using for Zoom sessions do not record ... unless someone turns on session recording. Same with baby monitors. Same with these things.

"but certainly they record and are used by someone to evaluate traffic condition. It would be crazy to have cameras that didn't record in this day and age." -- yet another person who is certain of things that aren't true.

11:20 AM, if the cameras don’t record and no one is watching them, are they really cameras?

May not be someone's dedicated job to watch them all day, but certainly they record and are used by someone to evaluate traffic condition. It would be crazy to have cameras that didn't record in this day and age.

Because I just KNOW some people will take this at face value, this is not a thing. The City's traffic cams don't record. It is not anyone's job to watch them.

Traffic cams don't improve flow of traffic. Are you talking about traffic sensors, that work in conjunction with the light system?

Minibeast Oct 27, 2021 10:23 AM

It's a traffic camera: The cameras are installed in a bell-shaped cover and are designed to have a 360-degree view of the intersection and be protected from the elements.
