Old Spanish Days announced their annual Fiesta Pequeña event at the Santa Barbara Mission will be closed to the public and Noches de Ronda at the courthouse will be canceled.

On Tuesday morning, Old Spanish Days organizers held a press conference stating the events will continue with COVID-19 safety protocols only to reverse course later that day and cancel some events due to the rise in infections.

Fiesta Pequeña, which normally takes place on the Wednesday evening of Fiesta week, features an evening of dancers and singers on the steps of the Mission. Spectators and locals would crowd around the Mission lawn to watch the festive display while local news station KEYT would conduct a live broadcast for those at home.

KEYT made the decision to cancel the live broadcast in order to keep their employees safe, according to KEYT reporter John Palminteri. For Wednesday evening, the Mission Lawn will be closed to the public and only open to performers.

Additionally, Las Noches de Ronda will be canceled entirely. The events usually take place on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights feature dancers and musicians on the steps of the Santa Barbara County Courthouse Sunken Gardens.

The Fiesta Mercado at the De La Guerra Plaza was canceled last week "to preserve the health and welfare of our community," organizers stated.

However, Old Spanish Days still plans to hold its Celebración de los Dignatarios event, a large party that includes eating, drinking, and dancing at the Santa Barbara Zoo. The Horsemen’s Rendezvous at the Carriage and Western Art Museum is also still planned to take place as well as the Fiesta Rodeo at the Earl Warren Showgrounds.

The unofficial mercado at Our Lady of Guadalupe appears to still be taking place, according to John Palminteri, although this event is not hosted by Old Spanish Days.

The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department announced on Tuesday that mask mandates will go into effect on Friday for anyone who is indoors, regardless of vaccination status.

Oh, of course we couldn't cancel Celebración de los Dignatarios! No, those high paying folk must not be denied their yearly self congratulation dress up night. Shut down everything else, without even trying to make it work with crowd control, but please, carry on with the drunk rich people shmoozing and dancing (vaxed or not) in a small place. This is gross. Fiesta is for everyone or no one.

SBTOWNIE - now THIS, this is a true embarrassment to our town. Elitism at its finest. Just like back last summer when all rec league youth sports were cancelled, but plenty pay to play sports were permitted. This is just worse though. Telling everyone Fiesta is cancelled, but allowing the high end, "pay to be seen" events like Digs is just gross.

Write on, SACJON! This "Digs" event is TOTAL elitism! So, so sad. They'd better put down the Sangria now, and get off their high horses! What's next, peons with pitchforks and torches storming the entrance of the Zoo? I hope all the animals turn their backs on the gussied up guests. This sucks cascarones! We won't forget this! I'm choking on my recycled confetti as I write! In the meantime . . .Viva La!

This is an absolutely ridiculous decision done at the 11th hour. Adding insult to injury, somehow these idiots thought it would be a good idea to block the view with large trucks in addition to cancelling the television broadcast! Last time I checked this is a PUBLIC space, owned by the PEOPLE, not the moron, noodle brained, wimpy bureaucrats who did this in hiding. Who made this decision? We deserve to know who exactly made this decision and they deserve the wrath of their choice.

Canceling is the right move. Not canceling the rich peoples' event is absurd and embarrassing. We are in for a class uprising in America in the next decade if not sooner, not in the least due to obvious, telling, disturbing choices like this one.

I don't necessarily agree cancelling an outdoor event and its livestreaming is the right move, but the second half of what you said we can definitely agree on. Class uprising for sure. This is obscene.

What a joke. This is an open air event. So people can still attend, they just have to pay? And the community can't get a livestream because some KEYT staff are in danger while filming outside? It would be perfectly safe for crew to operate outside and film this. This is literally becoming a hysteria. And the "dignitarios" will be partying it up at a paid event at the zoo while the rest of us will be barred from enjoying any aspect of the Fiesta that is open (and free) to the public?

Everything is set up and in place today, from rows or porta-potties to lawn chairs reserving prime spaces on the Rose Garden lawn for Fiesta Pequeña. Sound and light set ups in place. Street parking tagged and blocked off. Then poof, the plug was pulled. Sorry Old Spanish Days - you have been troopers this year. You and your band of loyal volunteers greatly appreciated. Always a wonder what you organize and pull off every year. Viva la Fiesta! (Someday again)

JOEG !! YESSS! We should cancel it for eternity! Cruelty to animals is not "entertainment". It's shameful. Shut it down! If your "tradition" involves terrifying and harming other sentient beings, time to move on from it and EVOLVE. Thank you.

Cancel ALL communal events. It doesn't matter if you're rich, ride a horse, are vaccinated or not. Every get-together outside your "pod" if you're lucky enough to have one, is at risk of death or disablement and now that Delta hits CHILDREN entails ADULT responsibility from everyone.

WHAT A LOT OF HYPERBOLIC RUBBISH. If you're vaccinated, the chances of winding up in hospital with fatal COVID are miniscule.

The under-12s should wear masks and/or be quarantined, until vaccines are approved, and the immunocompromised should weigh their risks, as they always did pre- and post-COVID.

We need vaccine mandates for entry to all private and public businesses. Stop pampering the anti-vaxxer idiots. Let the rest of us get on with our lives.

NewPress reports this morning there were large, happy crowds in the surrounding area viewing the event anyway, regardless of it being officially shut down to the public. Blocked parking at the Mission itself spilled out all on surrounding streets, all the way up to Rocky Nook Park and Mission Canyon.

They should be ashamed of the decision to hold the events they are and cancelling the others. All or nothing in my book. This event has become so “privileged White” it is embarrassing.

As a local “white” girl, that almost 50 years ago, was a flower girl for the parade, I stood out with my blond hair in the black and white picture taken on the Sunken Garden steps. I would not have been considered “privileged” then (single mom working 2-3 jobs to raise us three kids, I received free lunch and a bus pass for which I am so grateful), and in that picture I was surrounded by my piers and Mexican friends. I now can be considered, and do consider myself, “privileged”, and I do not like the way our celebration of Santa Barbara’s Mexican heritage has become so “whitewashed”. Yes there was an element of White back then, but not like now. Much like our town in general, we are losing the true flavor of it (yep, “whitewashed’)

Celebración de los Dignatarios and The Horsemen’s Rendezvous at the Carriage and Western Art Museum are continuing as planned? Masks required inside…hmmm not sure how that will go at the carriage house serving food….? What and who are they celebrating and honoring? I can afford and have attended these events, but many years ago lost interest. I felt they were just parties of more privileged like (but not like) me, that seemed to have no other purpose than an excuse to dress up, party and celebrate each other. I would much rather go to an event held by our Mexican community and be immersed in their actual culture and honor their ancestry and heritage.

I am truly embarrassed by these decisions.

Bubble, Fiesta celebrates the Spanish Ranchero Days - the large Spanish land grant cattle raising days in this area. The days described by Richard Henry Dana - Two Years Before the Mast. Fiesta has nothing to do with "Mexican" heritage; except for the Spanish colonial common denominator. It is all about cattle, horses, ranching and cowboys. SB Historical Museum can fill in the missing details, including the original intent to be a tourism event as well.

Yep, I saw pictures from a few people who attended the Carriage Museum "event" - masks inside were conspicuously absent, as was any semblance of good taste in hats or shoes. I guess sticking a flower behind your ear is supposed to make up for that? These dumb Fiesta events are ONLY for the nouveau riche, or the occasional old money narcissist who just wants to be seen. Painfully tacky.

Hey..I was'nt kidding about Festivus for the rest-of-us..
Organize & hold your OWN celebration, in the way you feel would be inclusive & safe.
It does'nt need to fall upon a special day, admire a deity, require a uniform, song or food restriction.
Be Sovereign.

BYZ - no one is "envious," just pissed off and rightfully so. Explain why paid for events are allowed to continue, but the free events open to the public are not. If the risk is so high, how are they allowed to party and dance, but the rest of us are not? Eat your own miserable pie.

Sac - you are wrong here my friend. Everything in town is open… so why must they cancel a capacity limited that can be safely distanced that’s been planned for a year that’s a benefit for the Fiesta? That’s just sour grapes.

Celebración de los Dignatarios and The Horsemen’s Rendezvous at the Carriage and Western Art Museum are continuing as planned... the exhibition of the privilege of the rich and entitled going to party while the peons are deprived of their Noches on the grass...... how fecking pathetic. Fiesta has always been the sort of thing you either get dressed up for and INTO or you take a vacation out of town. I am one who is all for it. People NEED Mardi Gras, they need to blow off a little steam, have a chance to meet with friends and relax. And I have been a pleased participant in the Parade for years, and am so sad to see it cancelled again. But IF the pandemic is cancelling all the free events, can't the elites see how it looks to the rest of us that THEY are allowed to continue? Just like their kids in private schools continued their educations last year? Oh, load up the tumbrils, people are going to snap.

Unlike the two others, this event would be a good one for Cathy Murillo to not attend. It will be interesting to see who does show up, claiming the title of "dignitario"!

Think what it means that an elite group may party hearty while the rest of us are shut down during a pandemic of contagion that makes people sick and may give them health problems for life. Two key points. 1) it can be passed to those in proximity even if you don't know you're sick and are vaccinated. 2) kids under twelve <aren't> vaccinated and are apparently very vulnerable to the delta variant. My advise is don't go to the party if invited, and afterward, don't have any contact with those who did if you love your kids.

Why was the KEYT live stream cancelled? How is it safe to record it to be shown later, but not safe to show it live? Is this due to some warping of the spacetime continuum that I did not learn about in my physics studies?
