Santa Barbara County Firefighters responded to a vehicle collision on Highway 101 at Nojoqui Summit Monday morning.

Before 7:30 a.m. crews arrived in the northbound lanes just south of the summit in Gaviota. They discovered two vehicles with one patient, minor extrication was required.

The County Fire Department has not confirmed whether this was a fatal collision, although scanner traffic reports at least one black tag, a confirmed fatality.

California Highway Patrol is investigating the collision.

This is a developing story.

CHP stated the driver of a S-bound GMC crossed over into the N-bound lane of the Jeep killing the Jeeps' driver. Initially had said the Jeep was at fault, not the case. This is like I said, where they all try to race down the hill at the steep grade into 2 lanes....I just watched them do a week ago.

Yeah noozhawk.com has the story too. Knew someone that lost their grandparent in same exact scenario about 2 years ago. Horrifying that this isn't remedied yet!

Hopefully CHP will provide an explanation. I heard the call and response and cannot make sense of what happened, beyond one fatality.

This is NOT the first time that someone going SB came across to the NB side and killed the driver going north. A couple of years ago it happened and I remember another time that was a really dramatic crash when someone SB was fleeing from police and they crossed to the NB side and killed someone, or more than one person. I cannot understand why there is STILL nothing in the center to prevent it! It's a steep hill, and a turn, and complete insane to me that there is NO barrier. This keeps happening and at these speeds the ones going North and uphill keep dying. INNOCENT drivers!

I remember when there used to be no divider along that grade. It’s a lot safer now, but still a good 20 years behind where it ought to be. Seems that’s how we like to do things around here. It’s a lot like keeping the state street stoplight on 101, or sticking with 2 lines each way and left exits through montecito. The world is moving along and for some reason we try to resist change and live in the past.

Confirmed fatal from CHP and by them stating, white p/u ( the Jeep) caused the head on. So yes SacJon, passing up the hill and I totally agree. I drrove that same stretch for 30 years and it just gets worse. There was fog there today but that's not an excuse. We just drove it last week and it's the same thing, people, trucks, RVs and travel trailers get in the number 2 up hill (middle) and people go crazy up the hill racing for the narrow down only to get to the One (HWY 1) and the narrows.

If I'm thinking of the correct area, there is a turnoff on the Northbound side going to Nojoqui; people leaving the area can also cross the NB traffic to turn left into the SB lanes. SUPER sketchy to do even on sunny days, let alone in the foggy conditions shown above. For these trucks to hit head on, it seems a likely speculation that one could've been attempting this.

SoCal Mommy wrong area, the Old Coast turn off there is over a mile away. This is N-bound 101 near the summit. The other Old Coast exit from Nojoqui would be blocked into the barrier K-rail and signed well against trying to go that way passed by the mini roundabout. This happened at the opening to the barrier south of the summit.

I thought the same : one of them might have tried to cross over the other lane . Which should be an absolute No-No !

Someone passing going up the hill? This whole stretch scares the hell out of me. I feel like every day there's an accident between the Gaviota tunnel and Buellton. So tragic!
