The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department (PHD) stated 49% of residents age 16 and over have received at least their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Approximately 23% of residents are fully vaccinated, "wonderful statistics to celebrate," said PHD Director Dr. Van Do-Reynoso in a recorded video.

She went on to state that vaccination is the best tool to stop the spread of the virus in the community as herd immunity will require about 80-90% of the population to be vaccinated.

Santa Barbara County will be able to move into the orange tier on Tuesday if the COVID-19 case rate per 100,000 population remains under 6. As of Friday, the county case rate is 5.2.

10:47 - Again demonstrating that you either have poor understanding of statistics, or very poor understanding of the English language.

People who routinely exhibit egotism and gratuitous sociopathy, make absurd assumptions to construct straw man arguments, veer off on odd tangents when cornered, and assiduously cherry pick to reject data they dislike do not exactly radiate scientific integrity. The same goes for those whose contrafactual opinions are based on tribal social media under the guise of keeping an open mind.

Yes, Freak, hyperbole, like claiming someone was “banned” when they weren’t. You should really limit your comments to scientific nit-picking, that is until you learn how to communicate with a modicum of introspection.

Fact: per a recent Gallup poll 'What are the chances that someone who gets COVID will need to be hospitalized?' : 41% of Democrats thought it was over 50% Another 28% thought it was between 20% to 49%. So, almost 70% of Democrats are orders of magnitude off from the correct answer of 1-5%.

___With this FACT in mind, like him or not, he was right to downplay the severity of the virus in an attempt to avoid the extreme over reaction we experienced, especially here in CA, where we paid such a steep price for our chosen (forced upon by governor abusing his emergency powers) covid response with NO DISCERNABLE BENEFIT. Your, and many others hatred for the Orange Man, has drastically impacted your ability to think clearly and make rational decisions. Facts matter and they are not on your side, haven't been on your side for sometime.

VOR—nice try. So you are saying that he was right to call coverage of the virus a hoax and to make a point of not wearing a mask which modeled behavior that contributed the deaths of many thousands of Americans.

That's not what I said at all Alex. I only wrote a few sentences yet somehow your take away is that I think the virus is a hoax. No wonder you can't sort the information from the mis-information. Gotta keep that head in the sand!

No Superfreak that won't work. Who is "we"? The US? Ridiculous idea. But YOU could go ahead and volunteer to be a peace corps volunteer in China if you want and then spearhead a grass roots campaign to alter the culture of the worlds most populous country, and see what sticks. Just make sure to report back to edhat when you have an update.

@Chem: What does "hold accountable" mean? Send in the B-52s? Economic sanctions to our biggest trading partner? Send them the bill? And what, exactly, would holding them accountable do to increase the number of people getting vaccinated and stop the spread of this virus?

One thing that could be done is to bring back the advanced warning system that Trump canceled. Quoting the L.A. Times: "Two months before the novel coronavirus is thought to have begun its deadly advance in Wuhan, China, the Trump administration ended a $200-million pandemic early-warning program aimed at training scientists in China and other countries to detect and respond to such a threat.

The project, launched by the U.S. Agency for International Development in 2009, identified 1,200 different viruses that had the potential to erupt into pandemics, including more than 160 novel coronaviruses. The initiative, called PREDICT, also trained and supported staff in 60 foreign laboratories — including the Wuhan lab that identified SARS-CoV-2, the new coronavirus that causes COVID-19.

Field work ceased when the funding ran out in September, and organizations that worked on the PREDICT program laid off dozens of scientists and analysts, said Peter Daszak, president of EcoHealth Alliance, a key player in the program."

"A mix of vaccinations, continued mask wearing, people already having immunity and the weather warming up has slowed down the spread, said Diana Cervantes, a professor of biostatistics and epidemiology at UNT Health Science Center."

"Cervantes believes, in general, most people have taken the virus seriously and not ditched safety measures. If anything, lifting the mask mandate made people want to be safer. On March 10, people didn’t immediately take off the masks and go back to pre-pandemic times, Cervantes said. Most large businesses like Walmart, Target, Kroger, HEB and others are still requiring mask and other coronavirus protocols."

Letmego- but two more weeks and it’s going to be doom... and then two more weeks... and then... and... ...

Ready to look at California’s response or... should we wait two more weeks...?

Letmego, are you saying that the citizens of Texas took responsibility for the own safety and acted in safe and responsible manner? That can't be, we need the government to do that for us....

It's easy to see here:

https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#cases_casesper100klast7days

In both cases per 100K and deaths per 100K (which you can also select), you can see that the do nothing states, say Texas and Florida as examples, are doing worse.

Do you mean New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Illinois and New Mexico? And what about Utah? Weren't you referencing their "death panels" in the Fall due to being open? Sure California is slightly lower than Florida...when you factor in the elder population in Florida though (and the fact that literally everything has been open there since Summer/Fall)...California isn't doing better. The same percentage of our 70+ residents died as Floridas...they just have more people 70+

LOL VOR. So you trust the citizenry to take responsibility but you think it’s right for the government to lie to them to protect them from the truth. Fail.

Someone here a few months back said Hydroxychloroquine thoroughly prevents and cures COVID. Is that true? Asking for a friend.

It's absolute BS, as anybody who's been paying attention to medical topics would know. Same thing with ivermectin. Pushed by charlatans and quacks.

Bingo! Yet there were some here praising it only months ago. It confounds me that some have taken the misinformation and jumped the shark with it.
