Very concerned, or actually terrified, that the Ellwood eucalyptus groves will go up one day after a campfire goes awry. Last week we passed through the grove that borders the tank farm on UCSB property. You could smell the smoke. The "camper" waved as we passed. If those groves go up, the piles of dead trees will go too. All groves either lead to or surround housing. The border of UCSB and Ellwood Preserve owned by the City has limited access, and jurisdictional issues, with the Ellwood side the responsibility of the County Sheriff and the UCSB side, UCSB police. Neither jurisdiction seems interested in clearing the 20 foot piles of downed trees or clearing the road that should go through there of more downed trees. The campers know where to camp, in areas where there is lax enforcement.

The grove at Elwood will burn down unless we take action to save it. It is just a matter of when, not if. The park at lake Los carneros, and all the other overgrown spaces in goleta will have the same fate. I think there is a prevailing misconception that trees and brush somehow magically care for themselves without any human intervention. This is unequivocally not the case. In nature, fires cleared the forests on a regular basis before humans started the ongoing fire suppression campaign. Fire could be a very effective way to maintain spaces like Elwood, and we seem to be transitioning to that approach with the daily fires we have around town. However, Elwood is so overgrown at this point that a fire would completely destroy it. In order to save it, we need to go in and mechanically thin out the grove. That means lots of pruning and lots of burn piles. If we don’t do that, it will all burn down in an extremely dangerous conflagration and the beautiful mature trees will be gone forever.

Venice beach had no problem in clearing the camps along the boardwalk ( handball courts), with bobcats & bulldozers this week?
They gave notice, brought the police, & got to work.
Afterward, they fenced the area...done.
As I said before..tent-city (ala glamping w/tents & yurts) at the airport, would relieve about half the population.

This City Of Santa Barbara took care of all the homeless on the beach by posting signs it seem to work except for the last couple weeks in the bushes right next to the skateboard park there’s a tent and our Police Department/ park ranger anything involved with authority has not done anything about it why put the signs up if you’re not going enforce anything?

Coastwatch finally calls it what it is VAGRANTS. One of these fires is eventually going to be a city disaster. Where is the Mayor? She wants to run for re-election but is no where to be seen or heard. Time for a new mayor & some of the city council.

clear and present danger has been displayed now for years. Expect lawsuits when lives and homes are lost. Lack of action is inexcusable re: clearing these encampments

I am all for clearing out the encampments. However, that will not eliminate the fire hazard. The source of the fire hazard is the fuels that we have accumulated over many years. Encampments spark a lot of fires, but there are many other potential sources of ignition. For example, in 1977 a man lost control of a kite on a windy day and it tangled in some power lines. The resulting shower of sparks ignited the sycamore canyon fire which burned a portion of the riviera and destroyed over 200 structures. This fire only stopped short of burning downtown Santa Barbara because the wind died down. The only way to mitigate the fire hazard is to clean up the overgrown and dead vegetation. As long as the fuel is there, something is bound to ignite it sooner or later. Clearing every encampment in town will not eliminate the danger.

Wow! This year must be an all time record for the sheer number of fires in the area. The grass is still somewhat green now, so things are going to get interesting as we transition into the dry season. I still can’t understand why we allow so much dead/dry/overgrown vegetation to accumulate in such densely populated areas. It’s like living with pools of gasoline all around. Sooner or later, a spark will find the fuel and it has a way of happening on the hottest, driest, and windiest day of the year. It’s a shame nobody is willing to do anything about it before a tragedy happens.

Keep handing them money on off ramps and they will continue to live in the area. Where these vagrants live is dependent on people giving them drug money.

I am so old I remember them being called derelicts.
Transients are people who are moving about. Derelicts and vagrants drift, grift and are careless with fire because they are drunk, or it is how they settle scores.. they'll burn you out.

We had hobos too, but I rode freight trains for transportation myself back in the 70's when I was young. The hobos I met were a mixed bunch. Mostly great people with a sprinkling of real hardcore crazy violent, drunken knuckleheads (you DO NOT want to get stuck in a boxcar alonewith them for six hours unless you want to get buggered, beaten or both)

Clear out all homeless camps on/near the 101 and UP tracks. I see the city is taking over the hostel for the homeless down near the waterfront. Good idea. Now take down/remove the same number of encampments as the people who will be newly in this shelter. This 'hands off' during Covid is bogus. SB is providing housing so no need for dangerous encampments.
