They've managed to clear the southbound lanes of 101 at Olive Mill as you can see in this 2pm (Wednesday) aerial. It may only be open for trucks and equipment for a while, but this is an exciting milestone. At the top you can also see that they're hard at work clearing the drain just West of the bridge. Also making rapid progress on the northbound lanes with only a fairly short section of deep mud remaining.

The comment, "Any excuse to slow the process down" is a mystery to me. With a m monumental job to do, someone thinks it is slow on purpose? Some are just happy being critics, a boost for their low self esteem I guess.

Keep in mind 24 hours a day, day 11 to get 101 open. Don't complain. Thank a construction worker or a truck driver.

Thanks for the reminder of why the recovery effort has taken so long, Roger. In addition to the somber issues you mention, they also need to be careful to protect worker health and safety and to balance speed with sustainable practices. The scale and quality of all this is *really* impressive. Thanks to Edhat and your many personal contributions to keeping us informed, Roger.

SBitZ.NET has 11am 101 pic from KEYT 11am news. They report CalTrans predicts 101 open both ways Monday. Hurrah!! Such a relief for so many families and businesses!

KEYT was watching it yesterday too, and by their 11pm show it looked like the NB side was cleared down to concrete too. Their 11am show today had a great shot of the whole thing cleaned and ready to wash. Opening that shoulder drain probably helped a lot, because the roadway had just been refilling as they scooped it out with front loaders. Even more important when the next rain comes, because it could've flooded pretty quickly. Looked like they've also opened a drain in the median there. More pix from the flight on SBitZ.NET, including some close zooms of La Casa de Maria.

Will they use ocean water that's free to wash the freeway & other roads, bridges, sidewalks, etc. or the valuable, high cost pure water from the City of SB?

We are going to use nice pure clean water, since salt water is corrosive and will ruin any plants, vegetation, etc. that is there, and we are going to make you do it by hand to save some water.

Any excuse to slow the process down, hey? You know that 100s of people are not able to get to work because of the closure of the 101? And during this time they are not drawing a paycheck and still having to pay rent, utilities and other costs of living. Nice to see where your priorities lie.

Water trucks don't haul corrosive salt water normally so I'd guess they'd use free reclaimed water from where ever since it's Caltrans and has nothing to do with the City until they do Coast Village Rd.

On the right side of the picture, where the blue and white truck is along the top. I think that area looks pretty 'clear' though obviously it still needs to be cleaned. However compare it to the left side of the roadway and it's looking much more like a road than a pile of mud!

I don't see where the roadway is in any way clear…Am I missing something?

It's not 100% clear on the SB side as the #1 lane and shoulders are still muddy but at least the mudpit is definitely showing signs of receding.

The roadway has not yet been "washed clean" but the bulk of the mud has been removed : you can see patches of the road concrete (the lighter patches) with residual mud on other sections of the road.
