County Education Office Reminds Educators of COVID-19 Vaccinations
Source: Santa Barbara County Education Office
During the week of March 1, 2021, public school districts, charter, and private school education staff in Santa Barbara County have access to approximately 1,100 vaccination appointments set aside by the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department in conjunction with Lompoc Valley Medical Center.
The process for TK-12 education staff to access appointments for vaccines this week is as follows. Individual appointments must be made upon invitation from a school district, charter or private school and are being coordinated with all public districts, charters schools and private schools in Santa Barbara County by the Santa Barbara County Education Office:
- Specific invitations for vaccine appointments are being distributed through the local school districts, charter and private schools this week. Due to the vaccine shortage, the first grouping of vaccines has been allocated for those individuals serving our most vulnerable students who require support that does not allow for physical distancing, are medically fragile, and are often unable to wear masks.
- After those appointments are filled, a second round of vaccine appointments will be provided for eligible staff with significant contact with others in-person, and/or close proximity to others, and mixing across multiple stable groups and/or locations. Each district, charter or private school will determine, for their context, which staff are included in this group. This process will continue for this week until the approximately 1,100 vaccine appointments have been scheduled.
- Invitations to schedule an appointment will be distributed by districts, charter and private schools. Once an invitation is received, instructions on how to schedule and register will be provided.
- There may be information circulating that an alternate path for making appointments is through 2-1-1. This is inaccurate. In conjunction with the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department, appointments for TK-12 education staff must be made through an invitation process by the district, charter or private school. Please do not call 211 to schedule an appointment.
- For the week of March 1, appointments may only be made with an invitation from a school district, charter or private school.
Vaccination plans for TK-12 education staff have not yet been announced for appointments after March 4, 5, and 6. Vaccination appointments for childcare staff and higher education employees are being handled through a separate process and more details will be released by the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department at a later date.

Mar 02, 2021 04:55 PMI've been teaching in an elementary classroom for 4 months, with children. I'll be standing in line with teachers who zoom. Maddening.

Mar 03, 2021 03:19 PMI'm confused - the article above lists the priority?
1. Those individuals serving our most vulnerable students who require support that does not allow for physical distancing, are medically fragile, and are often unable to wear masks.
2. Eligible staff with significant contact with others in-person, and/or close proximity to others, and mixing across multiple stable groups and/or locations.
I assume that "teachers who zoom" aren't in group 2 "significant contact with others". (Although it's up to the districts to assign that.)

Mar 03, 2021 03:02 PMIt's akin to George pushing the old lady in the walker, the clown and the kids down as he runs from the fire...
Using money, power or influence to jump the line ahead of those who are most vulnerable is just reprehensible.

Mar 03, 2021 02:57 PMDUKE - you are dead right. I know cancer patients who still haven't been given the opportunity for vaccination, while healthy young remote teachers are demanding it.

Mar 03, 2021 02:50 PMPitmix - I understand your comments...they just often need a bit of correction/help. GUSD is going in person next week for the 80% of students that want/need that. The other 20% are online. Their teachers...will be with them... 100% online. So no...the 35 year old teacher who is teaching a fully online zoom class should not be prioritized in any capacity over older people or people with specific needs/conditions. SB unified will also have X number of teachers fully online. These teachers should also not be prioritized simply because of their union dues...we need to be caring for (and prioritizing) the most vulnerable...and not the ones with the most politically powerful union. Make sense???

Mar 03, 2021 02:34 PMPIT - Actually, the teachers that are zooming after next week will be doing so the rest of the year. Schools are opening and at least GUSD is open March 8, 5 days a week. There are no future"re openings." So again, those who are zooming next week, will not be going back to in person instruction. And no, they should not have priority over others if they are not in classrooms. There are many many people out there with underlying conditions who need it much more than teachers who will be continuing to sit alone in a room doing zoom.

Mar 03, 2021 02:15 PMDuke, sorry you misunderstand most of my comments. Even if teachers are zooming now, they will be doing at least hybrid teaching when the classes reopen, right? That's what you are pushing for, right? So they should be eligible for the shot. Right now farmworkers and essential workers are getting it. Why not teachers and school staff?

Mar 03, 2021 09:28 AMPITMIX - many people "leave their house and are around other people with various degrees of personal hygiene" but have to wait another month to be vaxxed. Why should "zoomers" have priority over them?

Mar 03, 2021 09:24 AMPitmix - stop! You make the rest of the teachers look terrible with your comments! Advocating for teachers who are in a room by themselves zoom teaching (many of whom are 30-50 years old) over people still working jobs that are around tons of people (and people with conditions that make them more susceptible) is reprehensible. It aligns with many of your usual posts but still... reprehensible! Zoom teachers should get the vaccine in the same order as everyone else... advocating for them to jump the line is, well... reprehensible!!!!

Mar 03, 2021 09:13 AMGT, 1100 shots is not enough to vaccinate all of the school staff involved in education. Your current claim, and well as many of your previous ones, is false.

Mar 03, 2021 09:12 AMTeachers who zoom are still at school broadcasting, right? Which means they have to leave their house and are around other people with various degrees of personal hygiene. In-class teachers should get priority but zoomers should be right behind.

Mar 02, 2021 04:59 PMUNITASKER: wait, teachers who are NOT going back in the classroom are getting priority the same as those who are? That is a joke! They should have to wait like the rest of us. Definitely shouldn't be given priority over those with underlying conditions. That is one strong union apparently.

Mar 02, 2021 04:50 PMAwesome responses to SBRES folks. I agree. But hey, at least SBRES sounds as if he/she WANTS the vaccine - dont be surprised if a boatload of teachers/staff types resist the vaccine and still want their full pay and benefits going forward without resuming their roles, until who knows when.

Mar 02, 2021 02:47 PMSBRES ya when is someone going to make it easy for the teachers. I can’t believe they aren’t going to door to door and giving you YOUR vaccine.

Mar 02, 2021 02:17 PMIt does seem that the vaccine distribution has devolved to political power instead of science. Not impressed with any one in charge so far and the difficulty they are making for the average adult over 65. Loved the bird of paradise with covid up the nose comment, got a good laugh. Thanks

Mar 02, 2021 02:12 PMIf "somebody" had enabled the defense production act and joined COVAX we would have all been vaccinated by now.

Mar 02, 2021 04:24 PM77 million doses. Each vaccination takes two doses. So effectively 38.2 million vaccinated in the US. It's also great that the Johnson and Johnson vaccine was approved and Merck will help produce. While I'm hopeful of the future and near future I can't celebrate with fireworks yet. But things are looking way better than since this all started.

Mar 02, 2021 01:16 PMNewsom buckled to the Teacher Union --
Personally I think appointments should be continued to be allocated by age, oldest first -- clear and easy to understand. Certainly grocery store workers, people in prison and people with serious health risk issue are more at risk than teachers, particularly those working from home.
For those over 65 please try Cottage Hospital -- they have been great at setting up appointments. https://www.cottagehealth.org/coronavirus-covid-19/vaccine-information-signup/

Mar 02, 2021 12:43 PMAs an educator in SB I don't need to be reminded about the COVID vaccine, I need to know when SB Unified is stepping up to the plate to organize vaccines for their teachers and staff. It seems as if every other county in California is in the process or has already vaccinated ALL of their teachers and staff. What is going on in Santa Barbara???? I also heard a rumor that Peabody School (a charter school in Santa Barbara) is vaccinating all of their teachers this week. Again, SB, what is going on? I am happy for those who are getting the first 1100 doses but other counties have done much better.

Mar 02, 2021 01:00 PMSBRES - I work with a 70 year old cancer survivor who just got scheduled for a shot next week. He's been trying for awhile...AND he's been at work every day with me since March...of 2020! I hope you get your shot...but check the tone and the entitlement...the rest of us (non IT) folk never stopped showing up...and will hopefully/maybe get the shot sometime this Summer...

Mar 02, 2021 10:36 AMAdams School had a safe and efficient step up today. Kudos with staff for working with Earl Warren to have access to their excess parking on the Las Positas side. I hope Earl Warren continues to cooperate to alleviate the lack of parking/safe drop off situation at Adams. Thank you. Earl Warren, for being a good neighbor to your neighboring elementary school. Perhaps the school district can enter into some kind of agreement to 'share' that parking with Adams on a permanent basis.
