Caltrans Woodchipping in Summerland
By an edhat reader
Apparently, Caltrans has permission to chop down trees and woodchip them overnight in Summerland (within 100 yards of resident's homes). It will be going on all night.

Nov 24, 2020 06:54 PMDoes Roger have the woodchipping concession in Summerland, or is he restricted to the Milpas area?

Nov 24, 2020 10:42 AMNo sense in complaining as the state has the legal right to make noise for freeway construction 24/7/365. It is quite unfortunate, but that's just how "it is." My suggestion would be to purchase a container of ear plugs from Home Depot/Home Improvement Center or other local hardware store (places like Hayward Lumber would also have the ear plugs). I actually like the sound of wood chippers, mostly because I know that someone has a job and is getting paid to work.

Nov 24, 2020 08:50 AMMost of Summerland is within 100 yards of the freeway corridor / Caltrans property. Night work on the freeway is part of life. Maybe even preferable to daytime work that would increase holiday congestion and send Waze users through town on your neighborhood streets.

Nov 24, 2020 12:13 PMfreeway construction is not considered under that rule though. as traffic dictates safe work times. night time work is the norm sadly.

Nov 24, 2020 10:07 AMMost construction near residential neighborhoods is limited to daylight hours no earlier than 7am. For obvious reasons. Maybe the rules don't apply to the State, they don't pay taxes or have to get permits, etc, but maybe they do. Contact the Caltrans info person and express your concern. A woodchipper operating at night seems egregious.
