SB Museum of Natural History Launches Summer Camps at Home

Source: SBMNH
The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History has recently opened summer camp registration for children ages 4–9 to participate with their families at home. Five-day camps run from June 22 to July 10 and may continue throughout summer.
Given the uncertainty of stay at home orders and social distancing this summer, the Museum and Sea Center decided to get creative and create a new version of their signature Nature Adventures™ camps. The new format combines hands-on science activities with live, interactive, and engaging instruction from trained counselors via Zoom for up to 15 campers per session. Campers also receive a Camp Kit including materials, supplies, and a Nature Adventures t-shirt.
Camp themes include bugs, astronomy, marine life, dinosaurs, endangered animals, and wizarding science.
Nature Adventures Camps Manager Tyrena Chin, Ph.D. shared, “I often hear from parents ‘I wish I had camps like this when I was a kid!’ Well, now you can experience Nature Adventures at Home along with your child. Learn about science and nature in the safety of your own habitat!”
For more information about how these camps will run, cost, benefits to campers and families, and how to register, visit sbnature.org/natureadventures.
Full and partial scholarship opportunities are available.

May 30, 2020 03:39 PMHmm. I think I’ll save my money and have the kids watch the nature & history channels. In person camps or bust for our household. If your too scared to send your kids don’t but let the rest of our kids have a normal summer.

May 30, 2020 04:26 PMIt's so sad for our kids. All of this has been so hard for them.

Jun 01, 2020 10:46 AMI think it's a great idea. I'm not sure watching the nature channel is quite the same as having a particular class and curriculum. On the other hand, the main reason for summer camp for my kids was childcare so we can work. I certainly won't be paying $250 a week for no child care.

Jun 01, 2020 10:54 AMWhat a bummer. I looked at these a week ago and am certainly not spending $250 to stay home and supervise my kid watching a zoom meeting for "camp." To make it worse, UCSB has cancelled it's great day camp and all other summer youth activities. So now, even as my co-workers are slowly returning to the office, I need to stay home to continue watching my kids as I try to work from my kitchen table, which, as I type that, doesn't sound that bad! Just bummed for the kids missing out on so much already and now missing out on those fun camps.

Jun 01, 2020 01:24 PMSame. I've been keeping a list of virtual summer camps, virtual "tours" of museums, zoos, aquariums. Virtual art classes. There are a fair number of virtual summer camps that are a lot more affordable, that might be worthwhile for a week or two. (Programming, art, etc.) At least there will be 2 parents WFH most of the summer to wrangle the kids. I'm hoping at least volleyball camp starts up later in the summer for the teen. This was finally the year that my younger kid was going to experience UCSB camp!
