What's Essential at UCSB?

It seems UCSB has invited its facilities workers back to campus. This includes electricians, plumbers, painters, and HVAC workers along with other trades.

I can see how a skeleton crew of MEP trades could be essential but I find it hard to believe that the full crew is ''essential''. I know returning to work is voluntary but shouldn't UCSB be encouraging workers to ''shelter in place?"

This is the perfect time for all maintenance workers to be on hand to upgrade and/or fix any problems. They are all over the state beaches too, addressing trees and other maintenance that needs to be done.

Of course it’s the perfect time, but is it responsible?? Shelter in place!?? It’s also the perfect time to teach a wobbly 4 year old how to ride a bike on the boardwalk, but you can’t! Because, shelter in place. This world is far from perfect. Especially now.

UCSB is not “closed”. There are still a few hundred students living in dorms that need to be fed every day. There is online instructions and the online PaCE program is still available.

Part of the issue may be not wanting to fly, TSA lines, airports and airplanes being what they are. I would also be <very> expensive at last minute rates unless the airlines are doing something to ameliorate it.

We walked on campus a couple ago and it was like a ghost town. The few students we did see were mostly Chinese. I think many foreign students prefer to to stay in the US right now than go home.

Construction crews and maintenance workers are essential. Also firefighters and campus police.

And honestly, if they want to maintain something , fix the dang road that leads into the university from El Colegio and onward.....That piece of pavement needed to be resurfaced or paved or whatever more than 5 years ago and it’s still a mess....city, county, ucsb....fix it!

Two questions- Who defines “essential” at UCSB? Is preventative maintenance really worth the risk of potential sickness and/or death? The shelter in place/stay at home order has been issued for a reason. Give it a chance to work!

you arent reading anything anyone wrote. please understand that UCSB does A LOT of medical research on site. so before jumping to conclusions about how its not "essential" it actually could very well be.

So many wealth retirees and pensioners in Santa Barbara that will want everyone to shelter in place until 2025.

This is from an email I recently received.: "Facilities will be conducting preventive maintenance on supply air, fume exhaust, house vacuum, equipment cooling water, and emergency generators" All of this is necessary and can't be done by one person. I'm grateful they're not letting the place fall apart so we can get back to potentially life-saving research when things go back to normal, since people will still be dying of cancer when this is all over.

there are a dozen projects that are needing to be done. and 1 "crew" cant do it. schools are taking this time to fix and retrofit a ton of stuff while no one is in class. "trades" are essential as they make our systems work. thats my impression of whats goin on at UCSB, im not there. But I am a tradesman and talk to other tradesman and they have said what I just said.
