The City of Santa Barbara has fenced off Skater's Point skatepark after residents ignored the closed signs.

The skate park located on E. Cabrillo Blvd near the Garden intersection was closed along with other playgrounds due to social-distancing meant to prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

John Palminteri reports several skaters ignored the closed sign and continued using the park anyway which prompted the City to install tall fencing to surround the park.

When I passed by the park over the weekend a couple of times, I was shocked at the number of skaters and lack of social distancing. I have no problem with this closure.

I saw this coming. School is out and the kids (and adults) come out to play at the parks when there is a very serious epidemic that is destroying lives worldwide. Including SB.

This message was posted by SB City Councilmember Mike Jordan on Next-door: Getting tons! of emails regarding people out in public not practicing good distancing. Bottom line is enforcement is currently education, education, education and largely self-enforcement. If you are uncomfortable with your surroundings out and about, then retreat to somewhere you are comfortable. Meanwhile, the City is constantly evaluating and adjusting what they can do to improve obvious issues- ▪️Skaters Point is being fenced off as the signs were not effective. ▪️City basketball court rims are being removed, same lack of common sense. ▪️The pick-up labor line is an essential service, and better signage will be posted to promote better distancing. ▪️Beaches- particularly Hendry's- have been a constant email subject, but onsite observation there by City staff finds generally good practices. Other City beaches are similarly practicing good social distancing. The County and City will continue to monitor. ▪️Mission Rose Garden will see increased messaging, but overall behavior is deservedly responsible. Balancing the need to maintain one's mental health and healthy practices is difficult. Again, if the situation or surroundings make you uncomfortable, then remove yourself from the surroundings.

The City hasn’t taken down the basketball hoops at Ortega Park. What are you waiting for, City!

The fence clearly did not work. I took a drive around yesterday and saw multiple people with bikes and skateboards (20+ people) in the skate park after the fencing was put up.

If you are talking about actual "kids", then...school starts tomorrow (distance learning) in SBUSD.

D8VANILLA - why would we be worried? They're probably skating somewhere else now. What else do you think they would be doing?

What a shame. From what I would see on walking by, most of those that were using it kept their distance from each other; a few, older guys, sat together at the end. As often, a few can wreck something for everyone else.

Interesting --- it could definitely be both what you saw and what I (12:53) saw, at different times. I agree with SacJon, that it could have been monitored. A lot of city workers, and I assume Parks employees, are getting paid for not working and there could have been monitoring. Young people, and that's who mostly used the park, have a lot of energy that needs an outlet. Skating seems a good one, although I wish the Park were not there but on the junior high or high school grounds.

I saw just the opposite, small groups in close contact and people skating right past each other.

The skate park could have been monitored and left open. I'm concerned now that beaches and parks are next. It is really easy to be outdoors doing things safely. If you don't, you ruin it for everyone who is trying to do so!
