PG&E Warns of Possible Power Shutoffs as Wildfire Risk Rises in Northern California

Pacific Gas and Electric Co. (PG&E) is warning that weather conditions forecast later this week could prompt targeted Power Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) in parts of Northern and Central California amid increasing wildfire dangers.

In a statement on June 8, the utility company said it was closely monitoring an offshore wind event that is likely to develop Wednesday into Thursday, which could result in elevated wildfire risk in some parts of its service area.

The targeted power shutoffs could affect around 5,000 customers across eight counties and two tribal areas in the North Bay, North Coast, and Western Sacramento Valley regions.

The potentially impacted counties include:

• Colusa
• Glenn
• Lake
• Napa
• Sonoma
• Sutter
• Tehama
• Yolo

The two tribal areas that are likely to be affected are Cortina Rancheria and Grindstone Rancheria.

While no shutoffs have been announced, PG&E said it may proactively turn off power in some areas if required.

This will be the second PSPS this year, according to PG&E.

Due to the forecasted high temperatures, strong winds, and dry vegetation, the power company said it will send advanced notifications on Monday evening to customers in the targeted regions where power might be turned off.

PG&E said that it will work with local officials to open community resource centers in the heavily impacted counties.

Adding to the concern, the National Weather Service’s Sacramento office issued a Red Flag Warning for portions of the Sacramento Valley for Wednesday morning through Thursday afternoon.

North winds of 15 to 25 mph are expected, with gusts up to 30 to 40 mph, according to the weather office. While daytime relative humidity is expected to range from 9% to 15%, overnight relative humidity will range between 25% and 50%.

The strong winds are expected to cause fire to ignite easily and enable rapid spread of a blaze.

The Red Flag Warning will be in effect until 5 p.m. on Thursday.

PG&E’s power shutoff warning comes just weeks after the power company implemented precautionary shutoffs in some parts of Northern and Central California amid heightened wildfire conditions.

Around 4,700 customers throughout 15 counties were affected by the PSPS in mid-May 2026.
