Most Californians feel a high daily level of concern for their safety, according to the latest State of Safety survey by SafeWise. About 58% of Californians reported feeling a high daily level of concern for their safety, down from 64% the previous year, according to the survey.
About 37% of Californians said they felt safe in their state, which was the fifth lowest safety confidence in the U.S., the survey found.
The annual safety report also listed the top 10 safest cities in the state, based on crime rate data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Most of the safest cities were found to be suburbs of major metropolitan areas, like San Francisco, Sacramento, San Diego, and Los Angeles.
California’s Top 10 Safest Cities
1. Danville

Leading as the safest city in the state, Danville rises to the top from last year’s second position. With a population of 42,814, the city’s overall violent and property crime rates improved from the previous year, helping it push ahead of other cities.
2. Rancho Santa Margarita

Rancho Santa Margarita held the number one spot for two consecutive years before dropping to second place this year. The Orange County city remains one of the most consistently ranked safe communities in California.
3. Lincoln

Lincoln rose one spot to third place. With a population of 56,152 and as one of the fastest-growing cities in the Sacramento area, its improved ranking reflects changes in violent and property crime rates.
4. Moorpark

A new entrant to the list this year, Moorpark’s appearance to the top 10 this year illustrates how smaller communities are making big leaps in reducing overall crime rates.
5. Yorba Linda

This suburban city in northeastern Orange County maintained its position from the previous year, underscoring stable safety conditions and continued violent and property crime metrics. Part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area, Yorba Linda has a population of 65,469.
6. Calexico

Another city to maintain its ranking from the previous year, Calexico is the only border city to feature in this year’s top 10. Located along the U.S.-Mexico border, it stands out as the only city on the list not located near a major U.S. metropolitan area.
7. Poway

Jumping up five spots this year, Poway’s new ranking reflects changes in reported violent and property crime rates. Located in San Diego County, the city continues to rank among the state’s safer communities.
8. Laguna Niguel

Although Laguna Niguel slips one spot, the city is one of the safest cities in Orange County. Located in the San Joaquin Hills in the southeastern part of the county, this master-planned community consistently ranks as one of the safest cities in California.
9. San Ramon

Another consistent performer, San Ramon has retained its ranking from the previous year, reflecting steady and stable violent and property crime metrics. Located in Contra Costa County, San Ramon has evolved from a suburban community to a thriving city.
10. Thousand Oaks

Another new entry to this year’s top 10, Thousand Oaks’ inclusion this year highlights that relatively bigger cities can sustain a strong safety performance. Known for its scenic beauty, this city in Ventura County is located against the Santa Monica Mountains and offers a secure environment.
While the rankings help underscore crime patterns and relative risks, it doesn’t determine what happens within a community or a home. The safety of a community is determined by individual choices, community conditions, and external factors such as job market, economy, availability of housing, and local priorities.
Broader Safety Attitudes
In addition to the list, the SafeWise report also analyzed broader safety attitudes among California residents.
About 67% of Californians said they were highly concerned about violent crimes happening to them. While it was less than last year’s 72%, it was significantly higher than the national average of 55%.
Around 39% of Californians experienced package theft in the 12 months before the survey, giving them the fifth-highest percentage in the country for the second consecutive time.
Security cameras were the most popular form of surveillance (54%), followed by security systems (33%) and guard dogs (33%).
