California and the U.K. have expanded their partnership on climate action and innovation to promote sustainable development together, Governor Gavin Newsom announced on February 16, 2026.

During a visit to the U.K., Newsom met with leaders to advance partnerships in business, climate, and trade, according to a release. Governor Newsom and U.K. Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Ed Miliband, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) deepening cooperation on climate.

“California will continue showing the world how we can turn innovation and ambition into climate action,” Governor Newsom said in the release.

California and the U.K. share historical and cultural ties and a long track record of collaboration, and the MOU builds on that foundation, according to the release.

He concluded his trip at Octopus Energy, the U.K.-based clean-tech unicorn, which is committing nearly $1 billion to California companies and projects focused on clean technologies, carbon removal, and nature-based solutions.

“With supportive policy and world-class entrepreneurship in and around Silicon Valley, it’s an ideal place to back long-term investment partnerships that will benefit the U.K. economy,” said Octopus Energy Generation CEO Zoisa North-Bond.

In addition to collaborating with the U.K., California made recent partnerships with other nations during COP30. This includes the signing of MOUs and partnership agreements with Chile, Colombia, Nigeria, and Brazil.

California is working on building collaborations that “deliver real-world solutions,” even as “Washington retreats from global leadership,” the release said.

Newsom’s actions on climate change follow President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw the U.S. from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change earlier this year. The move means a complete withdrawal from climate governance.

Ridiculing Newsom’s partnership with British leaders, Trump warned the U.K. against joining hands with the California governor, according to a Politico report

In an interview with publication, the president said it was “inappropriate” for Newsom to sign such agreements and “inappropriate for them to be dealing with him.”

Known for his frequent criticisms of wind energy, Trump said the deal may backfire for the U.K.

Stating that everything Newsom touches “turns to garbage,” Trump told Politico that California “has gone to hell, and his (Newsom’s) environmental work is a disaster.”

A British Embassy spokesperson told Politico that their relationship with the U.S. “remains a cornerstone of our security and prosperity.”

The MOU signed with California is one among the series that were signed at state level, including Florida and Texas, that are aimed to generate jobs and growth in the U.K., the spokesperson said.

Reacting to President Trump’s comments over the deal with the U.K., Governor Newsom shared Politico’s news report on X along with a satirical reaction meme ridiculing Trump.

  1. This is true American leadership. Standing with the rest of the planet to make our home cleaner for us and our kids, grandkids and all future generations. Our next true American leader will shed all the insignificant noise of cults and bigots and stand for what is right, just and good for all, not just the few drooling morons who voted for him/her.

Newsom and those like him are the only true Americans trying to help our nation and our planet.

  2. It’s really funny to watch this snake career politician slither around and insert himself into international politics for PR. He’ll have his shot if the a$$ party wants to nominate him next time around. I doubt they will given his poor performance in his own state. Giant taxes, huge gas prices, and bottom level school scores? Yay! CA is so far left nationally, and look what happened to Kamala – I bet the Dems will have to look at Gavin as a losing play. And how about his COVID French Laundry flail? And his Train to Nowhere boondoggle looks like a nightmare to every taxpayer who disdains fraud and waste around the country.

    • BASIC – you think all liberal politicians are in it for themselves only.

Answer a simple questions, simple man: Yes or no, do you think Trump is doing what he’s doing to put the people of our nation above his own interests?

Again, yes or no. Come on, what you got?

      • BASIC – name one liberal politician you approve of. All you do is complain about each and every one ever mentioned here. Funniest part is now how you say my hate for Trump is irrational and I don’t see the “good” he does because of that, while you LITERALLY do the same thing here.

Now, as to all these “great things” Trump has done for us.

“Improving the economy” – Not really. You’ll have to actually read this article, not just the first sentence. FAIL. https://www.economist.com/interactive/trump-approval-tracker/economy

“stopping wars” – Which ones? Name one. Israel is still butchering Gazans. Russia is still destroying Ukraine. India/Pakistan had nothing to do with him. Others weren’t even wars, such as Kosovo. FAIL.

“negotiating trade deals” – Tariffs aren’t “trade deals,” nor do they help US consumers. FAIL.

“securing our nation’s borders” – Ok, maybe. But to equate decreased border crossings with national security is shortsighted and ill informed. We are about to be kicked out of NATO. Europe wants nothing to do with us anymore. All of our adversaries see this. If you think we’re safer now, it’s only because you have no understanding of foreign relations. FAIL.

“supporting law enforcement, etc.” – Jan 6th. Jan. 6th. Jan 6th. Just absolutely STHU about that now. FAIL.

You see, objective (look that word up) facts prove all of these “good deeds” by Trump are either outright lies or not as good as you think. Now, take a look at what he’s done to enrich HIMSELF and we can maybe have an honest conversation.

Until then, keep lying. It’s really what you’re best at.
