The renowned and iconic vineyards along California’s Central Coast may be the next target of the effects of global warming and wildfire hazards, a new study has shown.
Researchers found that many of California’s established wine regions, including parts of Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties, as well as Sonoma and Napa, are expected to see declines in climatic suitability for wine grape cultivation under future climate projections.
The study by Yusuke Hiraga and Takuya Matsumoto evaluated how climate change and wildfire weather together could influence the future of viticulture across California.
The research, published in Frontiers in Climate, analyzed 379 wine-growing locations across California using climate projections, wildfire weather data, and models that predict grape-growing suitability as well as wine quality.
Wine production is particularly sensitive to climate change because the quality of grapes depends on a combination of environmental factors, often referred to as “terroir,” according to the study.
These factors influence the development of grapes and the characteristics of the resulting wine.
As temperatures climb, these climatic conditions change, influencing the regions where certain grape varieties can thrive.
Areas in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties showed a decline in climatic suitability for wine grape cultivation under future climate projections, the study found. Similar decreases were identified in wine-producing regions in Napa and Sonoma.
In a sharp contrast, suitability was estimated to increase over time in Mendocino, Monterey, and in mid to south coastal areas, per the study.
Impact of Wildfire Weather
At the same time, wildfire weather is projected to become more frequent in many wine-producing regions, creating an additional challenge for vineyards already adapting to a changing climate.
The research also studied the effects of wildfire weather, with researchers noting that climate change is also enhancing the chances of extreme events.
Evaluating long-term climate trends and wildfire conditions gives a more complete picture of the risks plaguing California’s wine industry.
The study also found that wildfire weather does not have the same effect on all grape varieties.
Using a machine learning model, researchers predicted that changes in fire-weather conditions could affect wine quality differently depending on the type of grape.
Overall, the researchers concluded that the future of California’s wine production is expected to rely on more than just warm temperatures.
The research adds another perspective to the challenges faced by California’s wine industry, including shrinking vineyard acreage and slow tasting room traffic.
