California has launched satellites to detect wildfires from space, marking a major step in the state’s efforts to improve emergency preparedness.
The first three FireSat wildfire detection satellites were launched from Vandenberg Space Force Base on July 7, Governor Gavin Newsom announced.
These satellites will begin delivering wildfire data within months. The recent launch is the first phase of a full constellation of over 50 satellites by 2030 that will cover the entire planet every 20 minutes, according to the governor’s office.
The satellites will be able to detect fires as small as a schoolyard before they grow into devastating megafires.
The three FireSat satellites will use frequent high-resolution data to identify and monitor wildfires in real time. After liftoff, they will undergo a three-month commissioning and calibration period before delivering operational data, the governor’s office noted.

The satellites are part of a partnership between California and Earth Fire Alliance (EFA), a global nonprofit coalition focused on delivering real-time wildfire data to fire agencies around the world.
FireSat is the first satellite system that has been specifically designed to detect wildfires, according to the governor’s office.
The satellites have been built by Muon Space, the California-based spacecraft manufacturer.
“FireSat is about more than satellites in the sky; it’s about protecting families, firefighters, and communities that live with the fear of wildfire every summer,” Newsom said in the statement.
Officials said CAL FIRE played a foundational role in developing the FireSat concept, conducting early testing and concept evaluation even before EFA was formally established.
The early leadership and willingness to use new tools helped FireSat evolve from an emerging idea into a global wildfire-intelligence system, per the governor’s office.
Chris Anthony, a board member of the EFA and former CAL FIRE chief deputy director, said the launch represents years of partnership between agencies and is “the beginning of a new era in global wildfire intelligence.”

Builds on Wildfire Detection Techniques
The satellite system is a necessary step in California’s wildfire mitigation efforts, as the state experiences several instances of small to massive wildfires each year.
So far this year, there have been 3,215 cases of wildfires and 1,880 structure fires across California, the CAL FIRE data shows.
The FireSat satellite program builds on several technology initiatives California has adopted in recent years to improve wildfire detection and response.
These initiatives include the deployment of AI-powered wildfire detection systems, expansion of the ALERTCalifornia network of over 1,000 high-definition cameras, investment in drones, satellite monitoring, real-time fire modeling, and advanced mapping technologies to detect fires early and predict their spread, utilizing resources more effectively.
California has nearly doubled its fire protection budget from $2 billion to $3.8 billion and invested more than $2.5 billion in wildfire resilience and forest health projects, according to the governor’s office.
