Every spring for a fleeting few weeks, vast stretches of fields and gardens across the U.S. burst into vivid colors as tulips bloom in brilliant shades of red, yellow, and orange. The short but brilliant display of tulips has become a yearly ritual and a tourist attraction in many parts of the country, drawing visitors and celebrating the arrival of spring.

Although tulips are famously associated with the Netherlands, the U.S. is home to several well-known gardens that offer spectacular displays of tulips every year. From the sprawling valleys of Washington State to the historic Dutch communities of Michigan and scenic gardens in California, farms and cities across the country host annual tulip seasons that transform landscapes into vibrant seas of color.

Here are seven destinations in the U.S. that offer some of the country’s best tulip displays.

Every April during the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival, farmland about 60 miles north of Seattle transforms into one of the most stunning tulip displays in the country. Located in Washington’s Skagit Valley, the festival showcases millions of flowers across gardens and fields throughout the valley.

The best time to visit is mid-April. While the flowers may begin to bloom as early as March, they can last into May. The tulip season typically depends on weather conditions such as temperature changes, heavy rain, and high winds.

Very few American tulip seasons have a rich history as Holland’s Tulip Time Festival. Established in May 1929, the eight-day festival celebrates the city’s Dutch heritage and features over six million tulips planted throughout the city’s streets, parks, and public spaces. What started as a civic beautification idea grew in scope and popularity, transforming Holland into one of the best springtime destinations in May.

In addition to the spectacular tulip displays across the city, the Tulip Time Festival offers parades, Dutch dancing, a tulip immersion garden, cultural exhibits, live entertainment, and a carnival.

One of Oregon’s largest springtime events, the Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival in Woodburn draws numerous visitors eager to experience the tulips in myriad colors. Each year, millions of tulips burst into color across more than 40 acres of fields. While the farm began growing tulips in 1975, the public was allowed to experience the blooms from 1984.

The tulip fields are open to the public from late March to early May. Visitors can take home some fresh-cut tulips, potted bulbs, and other merchandise. The festival includes hot-air balloon rides, wine tastings, and family activities.

Although Texas is not commonly known for tulips, Texas Tulips has become a popular destination for the vibrant tulip blooms every spring. One of the largest “pick-your-own tulip” farms in Texas, over one million tulips bloom across the 12-acre farm.

Located north of Dallas in Pilot Point, the farm features around 100 varieties of tulips. The available varieties change throughout the picking season, which begins mid- or end-February and lasts through early-April. The farm was established by a Dutch family who brought their traditional tulip-growing knowledge and expertise to Texas.

6. Albany Tulip Festival, Albany, New York

The celebration was founded in May 1949 by the then Mayor Erastus Corning II and has now become a yearly event to witness thousands of tulips in bloom and welcome spring.

Every year, more than 180,000 tulips in 150 varieties bloom across the 81-acre park, covering the park in resplendent colors. The festival includes live music, local vendors, a fine arts show, and children’s activities.

Tucked inside San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, Queen Wilhelmina Gardens offers a smaller but charming seasonal tulip display. The garden sits beside the Dutch (North) Windmill in the western section of the park and has drawn visitors since the early 1900s. The tulip bulbs are donated by the Dutch Bulb Growers’ Association every year.

While the garden may not be as expansive as the other tulip fields across the country, the setting, overlooking the Pacific Ocean, makes it one of the most scenic urban destinations to enjoy the colorful blooms. The tulips are usually in full bloom in March.

The tulip season is brief, but the beauty of the flowers is lasting. Whether it’s walking through the vast, open fields in Washington or enjoying smaller gardens in California, each location allows visitors to experience the fleeting beauty of tulips in their unique way. For a few colorful weeks every spring, landscapes across the country are carpeted with vibrant hues, making the tulip season one of the most anticipated signs of spring’s arrival.
