Santa Barbara City College (SBCC) is excited to announce the appointment of Diana Zapata as the new Director of Human Resources. With a distinguished career in strategic human resources management and as a former student and faculty member at SBCC, Zapata brings a wealth of expertise and experience back to the campuses, further enhancing the college’s commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive workplace environment..

Zapata’s professional journey spans over two decades, with significant leadership roles in both nonprofit and for-profit sectors. She has demonstrated exceptional skills in recruitment, talent acquisition and retention, labor relations, staff development, conflict resolution and organizational development. Her multidisciplinary approach and proven track record in supporting institutional growth make her an invaluable addition to the SBCC community.
In her most recent role as the Director of Human Resources for the Carpinteria Unified School District, Zapata led all HR functions, including managing employee relations, ensuring compliance with state and federal laws and overseeing staff onboarding and development. She was instrumental in negotiating collective bargaining agreements and implementing programs that aligned with the district’s goals and mission.
Zapata’s previous experience also includes a tenure as the Organizational Development Senior Consultant at AIROOM, Inc., where she successfully reduced turnover rates and facilitated comprehensive leadership development programs. Her work with Chicago Public Radio/Media, Inc. further highlights her capacity for strategic planning and HR policy development.
Zapata holds a Master’s degree and a Bachelor’s degree from Arizona State University. She is certified in 360 Assessment by the Center for Creative Leadership and is bilingual in English and Spanish, enhancing her ability to engage with a diverse workforce. In her free time, Zapata, has volunteered to rescue animals for no kill shelters – a deep passion of hers.
