Cheers, music, and heartfelt reflections filled the campus of Adelante Charter School on June 12, 2025, as students, families, and educators gathered to celebrate the graduation of the school’s kindergarten and sixth grade classes. The ceremonies marked not only academic milestones but also a broader celebration of bilingualism, community, and student growth.

This year’s events came on the heels of a major achievement: Adelante Charter School was recently named a 2025 California Distinguished School, a recognition given to top-performing schools across the state for excellence in academic achievement and innovative educational practices.

Held in two separate ceremonies—kindergarten in the morning and sixth grade in the afternoon—the graduations showcased the accomplishments of students in Adelante’s renowned dual language immersion program, the first of its kind in Santa Barbara County.

The morning ceremony opened with remarks from Director Bolivar, followed by performances and reflections from kindergartners. Students recited the poem Sí Se Puede and shared their experiences learning in both English and Spanish. The crowd enjoyed bilingual dances and songs that reflected the school’s multicultural curriculum.

“As kindergartners look ahead to first grade, they do so with confidence, having built strong foundations in reading and writing in both Spanish and English,” said Maestra Alcaraz. “Many are already reading independently and will continue to grow as bilingual learners.”

Forty-seven kindergartners received their diplomas. “At Adelante, our youngest students learn that love and effort go hand in hand—a lesson that will guide them well beyond the classroom,” Alcaraz added.

In the afternoon, thirty-six sixth graders walked across the stage, closing out their elementary school journey. Student speakers shared memories from their seven years together and reflected on the lasting impact of their bilingual education.

“Adelante has taught me so much, but most of all, it helped me believe in myself,” said graduate Lopez-Solis. “Our teachers created a safe and supportive place where we could learn, explore, and grow.”

Keynote speaker and Adelante alumna Natty Valdovinos—now a third-year kinesiology major on the pre-med track at Westmont College—encouraged students to embrace challenges and trust their potential.

“Not everyone gets the chance to attend a bilingual charter school,” she told graduates. “This is a big achievement. And it’s just the beginning of your journey.”

She added, “You’re going to do great things—whether in medicine, education, business, social work, agriculture, or the military. Wherever you go, you’re already one step closer to your dreams, and one step ahead because you learned in two languages.”

Adelante Charter School’s dual language program continues to serve as a model for bilingual education in the region.

“Through this program, students gain more than just language skills,” said longtime teacher Rodriguez. “They become proudly bilingual, biliterate, and multicultural. They’re excelling academically—and growing into open-minded, capable, and resilient individuals.”

As the Class of 2025 prepares to take their next steps, their stories stand as a powerful testament to the lasting value of bilingual education and a strong, supportive school community.
