A passenger died Monday morning after apparently going over the balcony of her stateroom aboard the Carnival Firenze while the ship was near Catalina Island, according to Carnival Cruise Line.
The unidentified woman fell from her balcony and landed on a deck below, the company said. She was traveling with her family, who alerted the crew to the incident.
“Carnival’s Care Team is supporting the guest’s family, and our thoughts and prayers are with them and their loved ones,” spokesperson Julie Leonardi said in a statement Monday night.
Leonardi said all appropriate authorities were notified, and that law enforcement officers were scheduled to board the ship while it was docked at Catalina Island.
It was not immediately clear what caused the woman to go over the balcony. The FBI confirmed to various news outlets that it is investigating the death.
The 1,000-foot-long Carnival Firenze is an Italian-themed ship featuring Italy-inspired bars and restaurants. The company’s website describes its Terrazza staterooms as a stylish place to unwind, with access to a private deck.

Oh man, that is tragic. I feel for the family.
