A 16-year-old boy was killed and three others were injured Friday night when a Volkswagen sedan left the roadway and hit a tree on Meridian Road east of Revilla Drive in unincorporated Monterey County, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash was reported around 8:00 p.m. on April 3. Preliminary findings indicate a 37-year-old Castroville man was driving westbound at a high rate of speed with three passengers—ages 16, 14, and 7, all from Castroville—when the vehicle veered off the road and struck a tree.
The 16-year-old passenger died from his injuries. The 14-year-old and 7-year-old were taken to a San Jose hospital with suspected moderate injuries. The driver sustained suspected major injuries and was transported to a local hospital.
The Monterey County Coroner’s Office will release the deceased victim’s identity after next-of-kin notification.
CHP said the driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, manslaughter, and child endangerment. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Anyone with information is asked to call the CHP at 831-796-2160.
