A 32-year-old Castroville man was killed early Saturday in a head-on collision on State Route 1 south of Springfield Road near Moss Landing.

The collision took place after a northbound BMW crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a southbound Ford SUV, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 12:45 a.m. on April 4. CHP said a 25-year-old San Jose man was driving the BMW with two passengers, a 24-year-old man and another male passenger, both from San Jose, when the car entered the southbound lane and collided with the Ford.

After the impact, the BMW’s driver and one passenger fled on foot.

With assistance from the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, which deployed a drone, two suspects were located hiding near a pond in the area of State Route 1 and Struve Road.

CHP officers detained them and determined they were involved in the crash.

The BMW’s driver and the 24-year-old passenger sustained suspected major injuries; the second passenger suffered suspected moderate injuries. All were transported to a local hospital.

The Ford’s driver died from his injuries. His identity will be released by the Monterey County Coroner’s Office after next-of-kin notification.

CHP arrested the BMW driver on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, manslaughter, and hit-and-run. The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the CHP at 831-796-2160.
