As fireworks lit up most of California’s skies over the Fourth of July weekend, nature put up a different but far more intriguing show in one part of the state.
Time-lapse cameras have captured the aurora borealis shimmering over the Northern California skies after a geomagnetic storm pushed the northern lights farther south than usual.
A video shared on social media showed the northern lights creating a rare visual spectacle in Modoc County.
The aurora was a result of a strong geomagnetic storm that caused the displays to be visible in over 30 states across the country, according to a Tech Times report. In addition to Northern California, the displays were seen as far south as Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico.

The Space Weather Prediction Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) defines a geomagnetic storm as a major disturbance that takes place when there is a very efficient exchange of energy from the solar wind into the environment surrounding Earth.
The strongest storms that arise out of such conditions are linked to solar coronal mass ejections, where a billion tons of plasma from the sun, along with its embedded magnetic field, reaches Earth.
As the charged particles interact with the Earth’s magnetic field, they are funneled toward the polar regions, where they collide with oxygen and nitrogen in the atmosphere.
These collisions then release energy in the form of colorful light, which creates the dancing curtains of green, pink, and purple known as the aurora borealis or northern lights.
While geomagnetic storms create beautiful dancing lights in the sky, the storm conditions can disrupt GPS, the power grid, and pipelines.
The aurora is more commonly seen near the Arctic, while sightings in California are relatively uncommon, typically occurring during particularly strong solar storms.
The Space Weather Prediction Center had issued a moderate geomagnetic storm forecast for July 3.
As a result of the geomagnetic storm, the center said the aurora may be visible over some northern and upper Midwest states, stretching from New York to Idaho.
The storm brought vibrant aurora displays in parts of the continental U.S. and in states, including California, that usually do not get to see this phenomenon.
The magenta aurora was seen over Northern California, according to Tech Times.
Other Instances of the Aurora Over California
Although rare, the aurora borealis has lit up the skies in parts of California in the recent past.
A strong solar storm in January caused the northern lights to be visible from Northern California, although fog conditions made it slightly hard to spot, according to an ABC10 report.
In November 2025, the northern lights were visible across the state as a result of a rare strong geomagnetic storm, San Francisco Chronicle reported. The skies were illuminated in colors of green and red.
